Getting started with Triton Gear in Melbourne
I've just moved back to Australia to settle down here in (East Side of) Melbourne after quite a few years overseas and now finally can start buying some decent woodworking kit.
I want to build two beds (king & queen), a LCD TV cabinet (very wide) & and possibly an outdoor setting. Probably some sidetables as well - all modern designs or my own making. Having been to MatthewsTimber in Vermont, I think Red Gum is my wood of choice. With pine for the out-of-sight parts. I also found ABCO Timber is a stockist of Red Gum (from Bonum Sawmills), including their REDiboard (for larger surfaces). Any comments from experienced woodworkers would be most welcome !!!
I only have a two bedroom apartment at the moment, so not an awful lot of room. So I can go two ways:
- Utilise a workshop somewhere, like Holmesglen TAFE or otherwise (if possible)
- Convert one bedroom to a workshop with a decent tarp for a while (the missis shall just go wanting)
So does anyone know of a place with tools I can use on the weekend/evenings?
If the second option is my only choice, then I'm looking to buy:
- Triton Workcentre 2000 & 235mm Circular Saw
- Triton 82mm Planer & attachment kit
- Triton 2400w Router & Router Table (maybe - just for rounded edges)
- Triton Accessoires
- Is a simple dust mask sufficient for a bit of hobbying like this?
- A Corded Drill
- I'm looking for one that's going to last. Any ideas? Triton doesn't seem to have one... DeWalt instead?
- Can the hammering action on Hammer-Drills be turned on/off?
- Not sure I need the mixing feature, but the available power is nice.
Triton still seems to be all the go, even after GMC has taken them over. Correct me if I am wrong, but from reading the forums, unfortunately it looks like the Triton gear cannot be purchased from the Hills Clearance Centre nor from the Triton in Cheltenham anymore. I've noticed JustTools in South Melbourne have better prices than Bunnings, but cannot find many other places with good prices. So where do I go for the best discount when buying >$1500 worth of gear?

Go into Just Tools. In my experience they will better their web-site price if you are there in person, and serious about buying.
Please don't do the "Bunnings, beat this price" thing. All it does is drive competition out of the market.

See here for my monologue on dust masks
Yes
Not strictly true, when there is seconds stock, it is still disposed of through Hills Clearance Centre. You can't get seconds from Cheltenham anymore."Clear, Ease Springs"

Try the Hills Clearance Centre in Keysborough as mentioned, still clearing Triton stuff I believe.
Otherwise, if you're buying it all in one hit, get a written quote from the retailers that stock/can order it all that are near where you live & go with the best quote. They will be interested in those sort of $ & should give you a decent discount. Being nearby will also help if there are any probs with any of the gear. (Don't underestimate this bit, IMO.)
Cheers................Sean
The beatings will continue until morale improves.

Forgotten So Much
30 years ago I built reproduction furniture, since then I have spent many years as a boat builder/re-furbisher-20 years ago I changed tack, and spent lots of time in marine retail & specialist fitouts.
These last several years I have battled hard against depression, and I believe that I am winning the war. Part of the therapy is using my creative skills such as they are, and learning some new skills everyday.
The equipment that I see today, is largely foreign to me, i,e. compound mitre saws etc.
I have recently bought a good solid (partly well renovated) house in country Victoria, I need to finish it off. currently I own a compressor, a porter cable bradder, several sanding tools, including a Fein combination.
as I need to build some stud walls, amd other light projects, I would appreceate any advice on general use saws,(brands and models), also perhaps a disc/belt sander, thicknesser (budget).
Any help will be much appreciated, and put to good use.
Thanks: Pete

Help with gear
StaTa I can understand your interest in Triton as it is good stuph for the price, especially the routers and the saw. You might get in touch with a local Triton group down there for help and suggestions.
Who needs a bedroom? Knock the wall between them out and have yoyself a decent workshop. It may not be a true bloke's shed but it will do.
Pete I've been accompanied by the black dog on and off over the years. Had most of this year off work with it. Just haven't been able to get on top of it properly. Had these days where I had no inclination to do anything and no energy to do anything. Just found out I will most probably have to have a triple bypass. I think that coul well account for the lack of energy that I've been attributing to depression.
Anyway best of luck to you.

Hi Stataque Red gum is like most other gums when it comes to working it you need to take your time and not rip into it I use a lot of flooded gum (rose gum) for kitchens and furniture comes up very nice. All so built a queen size bed using camphol it's got a lot of grain that comes out looked nice. It's a pity you are so far away I have Triton a plane attachment I don't use any more. The Triton router is very good one one of the best in my opinion but not there router table the top is not flat and not steady I thought when I brought mine it was the ants pants but after using it now for 7 years I want out something with a full cast machine top So if I was you look around before you buy I know it will cost a bit more but it will pay for it self. As for dust mask try to put every thing into a vacuum the triton type is very good the only timber I found that got to me is silky oak (that's before I connected every thing to vacuum) I just use a good but cheap mask
Cheers Noel

This may be stating the obvious but I would think you will be in serious trouble over noise problems with the body corporate if you start using that kind of equipment in an apartment. Even if you are only doing it in council hours (ie hours the police don't get upset about) the body corporate can still get you if you are affecting other tenants.
