    Default Grandfather clock plans

Hi, I'm probably bitting off more than I can handle but I thinking of trying my hand at making a Grandfather clock. My worry is that the plans must suit the movement.. of course! However does anyone know of a set of plans that would suit the clock movements that are available in Australia? I have found a few via the States or the UK but not from here.

Carbatec sell plans; alternatively, Fine Woodworking published two articles about two years ago on bulding a Pennsylvania tall clock. I built that one: http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...ad.php?t=28168

Thanks Rocker for that but what type of movement did you put in your clock and is it available in Australia?

    K,

I used a Hermle HE 461.053 movement, obtainable from Carbatec. But I had to mount the chime assembly outside the back of the hood because the movement was too deep for the hood. But I managed to get it to fit satisfactorily in the end.

I must warn you, though, that making the clock case, particularly the hood, is pretty challenging, and not for the faint-hearted or inexperienced woodworker.

I finished off a clock started by my father before he died, Hermle movement and plans from a firm in Surry Hills or Rushcutters Bay in Sydney called U Build It or something similar. A few of the measurements were suspect but on the whole easy to follow.

I tried to contact the firm you are talking about today , will try again tomorrow. U Build it was the company I think. I have already downloaded the Pensylvania clock plans but would prefer ones with a glass panel in front so that the pendulum is on view. Rocker mentioned that he had a few problems with mounting the Hermles movement, so I will probably look for a plan suited to the movement, without too many "off the cuff" adjustments. I know it wont be an easy project so I want to minamize any problems before I start.

CMI Clock Movement Importers advertise in Australian Woodworker "for all your clockmaking needs, big or small. Plans, movements, dial, hands and accessories. " They say call them for details and info on nearest distributor. Based in Qld (07) 3271 2555.

No experience of them but probably worth a call as they import and distribute Hermle, Viola and others.

"You can make it" is a plans catalogue for U Build it at Rose Bay 02 9331 4932 www.ubuildit.com.au

    Hope it helps, good luck

Take a trip to Carbatec in Balcatta.
They have plans and the movements to suit.
Talk to Geoff for all the help you will need to make a grandfather clock.

I checked out the Carba -Tec Site and their catalogue but found no reference to clocks of any kind. I've decided to buy a set of plans from U Build IT in Sydney so I'll see how i go from there. Thanks to all who have replied to my post.

You need to go into the shop, more in there than in the catalogue or web site.
Movements are on display on the wall and plans on the book rack.

You will also get help and assistance.

Why not make up your own plan, set out what you want full size, front and side elevation and go from there.
This is my latest clock with all wooden movement.
