    Default Gun Stock..........

I haver a client who has a stainless steel .22 which has a black plastic stock and he would like a wooden one made which leads to the question......is there any one in Tassie south who can make a nice thumbhole gun stock for him as it is a bit above my experience.
He is looking at maybe a nice dark blackwood.

I only know one quality stockmaker, but he's in Sydney & has to move his workshop over the next month-and-a-bit, and THEN he's due to get busy. If you had asked a year ago, he would have had plenty of time.

Get in touch with the Vic Rifle Association. There's a few gunsmiths in Vic that might be able to help or know someone.

You could have a go yourself. The best tool for the job is a pattern maker's rasp (the very tool that stock makers use), and they are not that hard to use. Try on some waste to get a feel for it, because they cut very rough when used perpendicular to the wood but very fine with used at an acute angle. Good fun to use as well.

    Hey Tasman,

I might be able to help you find someone, and will find out later today. I'm down your way next Monday so might pop in to see you. I'll give you a ring.

I think I have someone who can assist. I'll be in touch. Much of this work is done by 5 axis milling machines similar to rapid prototyping then finished by hand.
