    Default Hello and advice sought

    Hello

I am not a handyman, but have just purchased a house and am keen to do some simple renovation work myself. I'm hoping that someone out there might be able to assist with my newbie kitchen renovation question.

I have some solid wood butcher block-type bench tops (like the ones you get from Ikea), however they are only 63.5cm wide. I'm looking to replace some old worn out laminate baenchtops with the wooden ones, but The current bench top has an overhang for stools that we would like to keep if possible.

So, my question is, can I join two of the 63.5cm wide butcher block bench tops together lengthwise (they are 246cm long) and put them on top of the existing cabinets as one extra wide bench top?

If so, what would be the best way to get them to stick together? I'm happy to reinforce them on the underside if that makes sense.

A related question: the cupboards the bench top will sit on are about 60cm wide, so the overhang will be rather big (about 67cm). Is this too big to be unsupported?

Thanks in advance for your woodworking wisdom!

    Paul
