Help to identify wood please?
Gday Wood experts.
I've come over here from the darkside (Metalworking) in the hope that someone can identify some wood for me.
I have no idea what it is. It was from an old student desk/bench that I retrieved from the dumpster at work. The screws were all slotted head so at a guess I'd say its at least 40 years old. The bench had a steel RHS frame.
It was made up of boards about 200mm wide X about 20mm thick X 2200mm long. Glued tongue and groove joints joining them with cross battens screwed to the underside. The light area in the 2nd pic was under the batten and would have been the original colour. I hope this is enough info. If not please tell me what else would be needed.
Thanks in advance
peter

I would 'guess' Meranti - but I have been known to have been wrong.

Cava.
I'm not an expert but I dont think its Meranti. Its a lot lighter in colour and appears to be harder. I should sand a bit of it. My sinuses will tell me if its Meranti as they block up with minutes of sanding the stuff.

Bollie, I would have said Queensland Maple, looking at the split. You probably would have got extra responses if you had posted this in the Timber area.
