Default Help with lots of things

    Hi All,

I need some advice on a bunch of things
    1./ Bandsaw Fence
    2./ Titan Chisel repair
    3./ Lathe setup
    4./ Disston tenon saw repair
    5./ My First Workbench

So First off the Bandsaw Fence - I bought this bandsaw some months ago and it came with this part, pictured below, but nothing that fits onto it, anyone have any ideas about how to set it up? Should I put a piece of timber on it or should I get a steel fence made
The bandsaw is an MJ343B similar to the one in the link and I think it's based on a Sherwood or vice versa. The second link has a photo of how this fence works but it isn't really detailed enough to see much. Lastly I don't have money to just buy a kreg otherwise I would just do that.

Onto the Titan Chisels, I bought 3 chisels in some serious need of TLC, they are Titan chisels although you can't see it in these pictures. My question is are they worth repairing? I only bought them because I read on here that they're a good old Australian brand and are sought after and they were less then a dollar each. How should I go about repairing them, I am thinking of just scraping the paint off and then sanding with 400 grit wet and dry sand paper to get rid of the rust before sharpening on the same and then going up to a 1000 and 6000 grit waterstone. As for the handles I plan on replacing them all with blackwood handles I intend to turn myself but I've never done anything like that before so is it a bad idea? Also are these going to be better then the new Irwin Marples I have?

Following on from the chisels, to turn the handles I need some advice on how to setup my lathe to turn spindles. As I understand it I need a dead centre on the head stock and a live centre on the tail stock for turning spindles. My problem is on the head stock end there isn't anywhere to put a centre, the hole you can see is about 2mm in diameter, is it meant to have a whole like the tail stock? Do I have to buy a chuck to do this now? I don't really have $100+ to spend on a chuck so are there any other options?

I got this disston tenon saw for $2 but when I started cleaning it I noticed that the blade has a wave in it, the back of the blade is dead straight but the cutting edge probably comes to about 5mm of centre at the greatest point, is that easy enough to fix, do I need to just try and bend it out by hand or is there a proper way to do it. A friend said just take it to a sharpener and they'll do it for you and it won't cost much anyway.

Lastly I just wanted to show my new work bench that I've spent the last month and a bit making, probably sunk 30ish hours into it (yes I'm slow).
First photo is just the full glue up, the second photo is the frame fully assembled and oiled, the long joists are attached via through tenons and the short joists tenons butt up against the long.
The benchtop and shelf supports are screwed in because I lost my patience although drilling holes for dowels wouldn't have taken that much longer
I still need to put a hard wood trim around the edge of the benchtop. One question I do have on this is should I oil the Benchtop Plywood base or the MDF top and shelf?

I will reply to the items I think I can add value to and leave the others to those with more knowledge.
    Bandsaw fence
Yes you just need to put either a length of nice straight hardwood on it or an aluminium extrusion. If you used coach bolts and countersunk them into the working face below the surface you would just put the shank of the bolts into the slots with nuts and flat washers to lock it in place. The plastic headed screw would go in the tapped hole in the centre and that would push up against the middle of the fence piece. By slackening off the mounting bolts you would use the centre screw as a pivot point and tighten the mounting bolts incrementally to adjust the fence to suit the cut of the blade.
    Chisels
I would do just what you suggest in cleaning them up and making new handles and sharpen.
    Lathe
I don't know if you can buy a drive centre that will screw onto the thread on the headstock shaft. I had one on my first lathe but that one was home made. If you have a faceplate to screw a piece of timber onto you could possibly glue the end of your spindle onto that and support the other end with the tailstock. Does your lathe have a brand name?
Don't worry about how long it takes to make anything. Just enjoy the process and the learning that comes with each project.

Thanks Treecycle, the lathe is a shopbuilt one as well, I do have a faceplate so I'll try and setup a spindle with a piece of timber and see how that goes.

For fixing your tenon saw look here: Tensioning a backsaw plate

Remember to check if the back is already fully driven down on the blade, if so you'll need to lever it up before you tension.

    Welcome to the Forum,

    Cheers,

I believe I have the same fence on the Carbatec bandsaw I bought 2nd hand. It has a plank of hardwood attached to it. I'll try to remember to post a pic on here over the weekend. Or just ask if there's something specific you wanted to know.

An aluminum extrusion would be another option.
