Help with a Plan
Hi
I've just joined the forum so I suppose I had better introduce myself.
I'm Bev, and very new to woodworking. The only thing I have attempted in the past is to restore old furniture.
However, now I have access to a number of tools at my girls' school and want to tackle making a coffee table with some help from my husband and the woodwork guy at the school.
The help I am looking for is in the form of a woodwork plan for a certain type of coffee table.
I want to make a coffee table with wide drawers so that we can hide a wireless computer keyboard and mouse... and have a magazine rack underneath the drawers.
Does anyone have a plan like this that they wouldn't mind sharing?
The tech teacher has a couple of plans for coffee tables but nothing like what we want.
I did a search on Google for free plans but there just basic coffee tables.
I am looking forward to reading all the tips and suggestions you all have.
Cheers

hi bev,
why not try and design your own then you have a one of!
you obviously know the size of the piece , just do a couple of quick sketches to see what you like.
then do a working drawing showing dimensions and the type of joinery you want and highlight the joinery on your drawing . eg if your using mortice and tenon joints to attach a rail to a leg , show this in a side column then you can also use this too show the dimensions of tenons etc.
which helps when you come to making out a cutting list, of course we all forget sometimes when cutting stock to size to add in the length of the tenon!(well i do at least)
with your experience in restoration you should already have good knowledge in joinery.
have a go.

Hi Bev,
Welcome to the forum,
As Mik has said, maybe try to design a coffee table yourself. I will add though that if you are feeling a little daunted by this (I know for me designing can be a little on the scary side ), then maybe draw it as best you can - with some dimensions if possible), and then if you have a digital camera, take a photo and post it. I am sure that there would be a few of the more experienced woodies here that would be willing to give you some tips on how to make your design come to fruition, and also give you some tips on maybe some modifications to the design to better help you see the idea in your head become a real piece to house coffee!
Good luck with it.Cheerio.

Hi Bev and welcome
Could not find exactly what you're searching for, but you may like to look at these plans and adapt and combine the different styles to create your own unique design

(this one is probably close to what you want, just a bit tall)
Good luck

Hi Bev,
Welcome to the greatest BB of them all. Glad you've come on board.
I would suggest that you find a plan of a 'standard' coffee table that you like, then widen the height of the rails that the top sits on to accomodate the drawers etc and also put the magazine rack in. I'm shure that if you have a coffee table plan, the woodwork teacher will be able to guide you through adittions. They teach technical drawings, so it should be pretty straight forward for him/her.
Good luck, enjoy and please post some pictures once your table is done.
If you come to Perth, have a look at Carbatec in Balcatta as they may have a book with a similar table in it, as they keep heaps of books on woodwork etc.
BTW happy birthday for yesterday. As a birthday present I'll have a look see on your behalf on Monday when in Carbatec if they have something along the lines....if so I'll pm you.

attached are some possible designs based on what you've described.
If you like any of them, I and I'm sure "the others" can help you dimension and detail them to the size you require.
In terms of building the table, I suggest you start with the legs and leave the top to last.
