Help with soap dishes (especially in Brisbane)
Hope everyone's tools stayed dry!!!
I make soap. Well, at the moment I make lather because of all the water around. But normally, I make soap.
Handmade soap tends to melt pretty quick if left in a pool of water, so I want to make some wooden soap dishes. Nothing fancy, has to be made cheap enough for me to sell on without costing the earth.
I can buy (ARGH, what's it called? Thin strips of wood) from Bunnings and I can cut it, I could hand sand the ends. That would take an awful long time with the tools I have.
I'd be happy to pay (in money if I have to, beer if prefered, or even SOAP! I could keep you in soap for a year!) if someone else would cut and sand with power tools for me. I'll supply the timber.
The other thing is - the soap would be wet, would the long thin things from Bunnings be ok raw, or would I need to finish them in some way?
Many thanks
PS. Probably the wrong time to post this, but at the moment we have a moat and there is nothing else for me to do excpe think

Hi Eliza
When I used to live and work in South East Asia many years ago a lot of the soap dishes were made from thin Bamboo strips....with the natural properties of Bamboo, finishing didn't seem to be an issue.

Thank you Bev - did you stay high and dry?
I haven't touched my lathe in over a year. I feel guilty. But I'm selling soap and that's actually working for me. Started late last year, my goal is to still be in business next Christmas!

Yep, all dry here. Shame on you girl for not being at the lathe but good to hear that you are enjoying what you are doing. Give me a ring early in the week.

You could prolly use the lathe to make soap dishes? Or as a sanding machine with an appropriate sanding disk on a face plate or something.

Hi Eliza,
If you are interested, go searching through Google Images for soap dishes and see what you get as inspiration. (www.google.com and then click on the Images link top left corner area of the page)
I've made a couple of soap trays by running the drop saw through a block of timber, but only cutting barely halfway through, cut a number of these parallel to each other and then if you can, safely, turn the timber over and turn it 90 degrees and cut again to the same depth. By doing this, you end up with a lightweight block with airvents/drip holes. cut to length, sand as much as you want. Apply your finish
(I put a couple of coats of Lanotec on.) and they are all done.
cheers
