Default Where to hire a Thicknesser or Pay someone to do it!

Hey, before i go any further just wanted to say a massive thanks to all you legends out there who take the time to help out the clueless amateurs like with your wisdom, experience and knowledge. It’s greatly appreciated

so I have about 50 L/M of old Blackbutt Decking that I need to get refinished as it has an old stain on it. I live in the Penrith area of Sydney and I was wondering if anyone knows where I could I hire a Thicknesser for the day? I tried Kennards etc but they don’t have any. Alternatively, are there Joinery or Mills out there that I could pay to have my timber put through their Industrial Thicknesser? It is completely free of nails and screws. Any advice or direction would be hugely helpful!

    thanks so much

Or you could wander down to Hare & Forbes and buy the cheapest box Thicky, as I know that most professional shops won't touch reclaimed wood, no matter how much you profess that there is no metal in the wood.

How come you need it for the whole day? I wouldn’t have thought 50 L/M would take that long. Are all the boards going to be the same thickness?

I think most joinery shops would charge around $80 an hour, but I doubt they’d take the risk with recycled boards.

In saying that, I have offered this service before to local builders (mainly blackbutt stair treads) and have dedicated a set of cutters on my jointer/thicknesser for this. But if you do indeed need it all day, you’d be better off buying a thicknesser like Pat suggested.

Take it all down the road to Felder and ask if they can give you a demo on a few of their machines to see which gives the best finish??

No Comercial set up would put second hand wood through their thicknesser. Unless they are new at it and you are the job that’s going to teach them why it’s not worth it .
    Or
Unless they are a salvage yard and have a machine just for machining such things .

I agree, I worked in a sheltered workshop and we only had a ten inch planer/thicknesser and when we joined boards together for a desktop or coffee table etc we would take it to a cabinet maker friend, and the proviso was only if it was new material. It's not just the risk of damage to the cutters it's the downtime to change them out. Not sure about stained boards but I know painted ones should never be put through as they dull the cutters quick smart.

How wide are the boards, what about using a belt sander?

    This.

It may not be what you wanted to hear or the cheapest option, but it probably would be the quickest and most convenient.

    From your other thread

I have recently come across around 180 LM of old Blackbutt decking. It’s pretty dark, dirty and stained but I have recently borrowed a mates Thicknesser which is struggling to be honest but doing a decent and very slow job.
Looks like you have to borrow your mate's thicknesser again for the rest of the Blackbutt timber.

and probably buy two sets of blades

one to wreck on this job, and the other so that you return the thicky with fresh blades
