Default Should I hire a trailer for the Maleny Wood Expo?

This is the big question this week. Should I hire a trailer for the Maleny Wood Expo?
My plan is to stock up on timber for most of the coming year's projects.
I have a salon car with fold down seats. I can fit a surprising amount of timber in there but obviously it is not a ute. I'm limited particularly in terms of length of timber.
I don't have a trailer so I'd have to hire one. I'm about 1.5 or 2 hours away from Maleny.

I'm wondering if I can go up one day and have timber set aside for me. Then if I have too much I can come back the next day with a trailer. Is that a flawed plan?
Should I just see what I can fit in the car?
I used to be indecisive but now I'm not sure.

Anyway I'm looking forward to this weekend.

What sort of projects are you looking at?

If it is larger furniture, table, buffet etc then I would consider hiring a trailer.

However, if it is smaller projects like boxes, toys, cutting boards etc then perhaps not.

Take the trailer, worst case it costs you a $100 for the day. Otherwise you might regret not taking it.

I only went once and took my trailer, I did not regret it, made some of the best furniture I ever made from the wood I got there. If I was ever to go back (I now live in Tasmania) I would not think twice about it, take the trailer.

    Maybe.

These sort of events lend themselves to overpricing by vendors due to impulse purchase opportunities.

I've not seen good deals there in the last three years IMO in terms of timber.

Just take the car Dave. Save the hire cost and spend that on timber if you want. Or, go and see Colin Clinton and buy a nice tool at a nice price. You can polly hide that in the glovebox.

I'll prolly be there Saturday early. You have my number.

The dilemma that I see is the driving time is not going to be short and the suspension on your car could be effected if over loaded.

That being said personally I would still go without a trailer and return the next day to collect. You just might come up with another option where someone might be able to deliver?

I'd also ask what projects you're working on.

With that said, I don't think you'll have any trouble getting folks to set things aside for you, mark them as sold, etc. And if they won't, I'd go up to the main pavillion area where the Wootha Prize entries are and find someone important and just ask them if there's a good spot for you to stash stuff. I'm sure someone will help.

I'd hold off on the trailer until you know you need it. I went there several times with a Subaru Forester and was never left wanting for more.

Is tying things to the top of your car an option?

    Cheers,
    Luke

I am a beginner and so I like to do all sorts of projects to see what I like and just because I like to build things out of wood.
So far I have done everything from simple Christmas things and candle holders through to building a queen size bed and a few things in between.
I just finished a large window valance.
Currently I'm finishing off some karri standing lamps.

    I am reluctant to start my next project until I do a bit more on improving the workshop. I'm trying to come up with a wood rack design to suit my shed. I try to alternate between improving the workspace and producing something. But putting aside the workshop;

I have a list of projects I'm considering. Some would be made from sheet goods or cheaper materials. Some would be worth having in nicer hardwoods and I'd like to learn about working with various timbers.

Planned projects include a coffee table stand to support a marble top. I want a deep coloured hardwood for that. Either some karri I have or else something I buy at Maleny.
I started some little boxes as a learning exercise I'd like to finish.
The wife wants me to make this little decorative piece, which I have prepared the timber for.
A bit of a priority is some very large cabinets that I was thinking I would perhaps do in melamine. Although they would be better in something lighter like ply if I can think of a way to make it look nice.

After that here are somethings I'm considering doing:
The bathroom vanity has seen better days. It is an L shape so that would be a large project.
A large wall cabinet for the laundry.
Someone saw a step stool I made and they want want too. So that would be a good gift and is simple to do.
I have a headboard to do.
Some chairs I am going to improve.
    A very small decorative cabinet.
    A mirror frame or two.
A waterfall side table (I already have the slab for that but can't decide how to join it accurately.).
Hexagonal shelf boxes for wall display.
    A table lamp
I would like to learn box making. I started to have a go but ran out of time.
Maybe try a bandsaw box as well.
    A wall clock
    A potato bin.
    A small bathroom cabinet.
I want to try power tool carving.
Some salt and pepper shakers (without turning).
    A servette stand.
Some more lamps - when I can think of a design I like.
Probably another side table or two.
    A passage table.
    A holder for the remotes.
Some drawers for the bed I already made.
    A shoe rack.
    Cutlery draw dividers.
There is bound to be a Christmas idea come up.
Probably a bunch of small things I haven't even thought of yet.
Dear wife is always coming up with new ideas and I have my own.

Then in another year I'll probably start looking at some bedroom furniture.
I want to build up my skills so that I can eventually make some nice furniture. But I'm happy to make lots of simpler things first to build up my skill set.

I don't have a cut list for any of that stuff.

Lots of people the first day until about 2pm.
I took Bevan's advice and avoided going completely crazy. I still bought a fair bit.
The car was more than enough though.

I didn't know anything about Queensland Silver Ash. but I like the look and feel of the blonde hardwood. So I bought some which you can see on the top left. Then last night read up about it. Based on what I read I'm happy I bought a fair bit. I will have to think of a special project for that. I think I should combine it with a contrasting timber.

Now I have to find somewhere to store this stuff. I'd like to store it standing up but that might be impossible. I can lay it down under the house but I'm have to think about how I'm going to make it completely flat there.

Abortech had show specials so I'm going to give power carving a go this year.

I met Morris Lake the author of Australian Rainforest Woods. He showed me his manuscript of his up coming book. Regretfully I didn't have time to chat with him much because some clown injured my little wife. So she spent most of the day walking round with a very painful foot.

Carbatec were not there. or I didn't see them. I looked because I want some glue but no one seems to sell glue at these things. I also didn't find anyone selling little fittings for boxes.
There were many other things to see and spend your money on like last year.
