Default Hot Fingers! My first bowl

    'Allo,

I've been playing on Skew's little Ledacraft making various kinds of spindles for about a month now (Hair pins, chopsticks, knitting needles etc). So, it was only a matter of time before I asked for help with a bowl. This weekend he came home with a slab of nicely coloured/figured camphor laurel for me. So, while he hogged into a big piece of extra hard 'who knows what' on the woodfast, I got us both a little 'green camphor laurel' stoned on the Leda.

It is a tutorial piece so he mounted it for me to show me how, made the first two cuts to show me 'up hill. vs 'down hill' and reverse chucked it to make sure it was secure, but other than that all he did was point and make suggestions. The hot EEE fingers are all mine.

I'm rather chuffed it didn't end up in pieces or with a hole in the bottom.
Skew says to say it doesn't have a flat bottom either. I'm guessing that's a good thing.

Oh Dear!!!! You just embarked on the steep slippery slope that can only have one destination.....addiction!!!
Well you have made a great start. You have enhanced the natural figure of the piece. You will start to look at branches on trees and wonder......"if I were to.....ooh there is a better one.....if only...." yep thats how it starts and there is no cure
Make sure you keep us posted with your progress/addiction
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod

Well done Ann, most peoples first bowl has vertical walls and right angle transition and a flat bottom, myself included.

I'll have to add it to my quilting, fiberwork, baking, and computer addictions. The question is, can one be a mad quilter AND a mad turner? We'll see if the cross interests finally drive me over the edge. As for spotting wood to turn, I was already horrible for that before. "Oh, are they going to cut that limb?," "You can't put that in the firewood pile! Look at the figure!" Now I'll just be doing it for me

Ah, Thank you Pat. So that's why he was chuffed it wasn't a flat bottom. I'm lucky, most people don't have a competition turner to annoy every few minutes "Is this right? How does this look? Have I gone too deep?" Now to figure out how to better work that pimple in the middle eh?

Wheelin, He's either lulling me into a false sense of security, or keeping the good stuff to himself. The jury's still out. But, we were joking at the time about how he may come to regret being such a good teacher So the ironbark burl may be hidden in the back of the stack for himself while the plain pieces come out front for me.

You're funny Cliffy. I admit I looked at the pictures and nearly had a heart attack. "How'd that chip get in the rim! I'd have noticed that!" went back to the bowl and it was a trick of the colour. No chip. Phew! But the wood is slightly green, so I do expect it to crack a bit in places and move as it dries. C'est la vie. No glue yet.

Thank you everyone for your positive comments. Now let us see if he lets me go diving in his precious stacks Muah HA HA!

The 'visible glue line' is a running joke with Jim (powderpost).

Some seppo saw one of his masterpieces on the internet & claimed he could see the glue lines.
