    Default Huon spoon

Just decided to have a go at making a wooden spoon, been meaning to have a go for a while. I don’t have any carving chisels so I used my trim router with a ball end bit in it to start the shape of the inside curve. Then moved to a small flap wheel in the dremmel to continue the shaping. Rough sanded by hand with 100 grit. Then I cut it out on the bandsaw and shaped the outside with my linisher and hand finished.

Really nice proportions, Cal, and lovely finish. Looks like it will feel "just right" in the hand.

Had to read your post twice. Essentially, your spoon was machine made to look like it was hand made!

It was so much fun I made a deeper one!

    My process.
    Route out the centre.

Hit it with the flap sander on the dremmel

Sand with 100 grit to remove lumps and bumps.

A bit of work with a scraper.

    Cut out on bandsaw.

    Shape outside on linisher.

    Hand sand to finish.

Very nice spoons - but I'm giving the 'world's cutest scraper' award to that little curved jobbie nestling in the spoon recess.

Two more, this time tea spoon sized. More like a baby food spoon.

I really shouldn’t be going down this path, I have too many other things occupying my time in the shed!

Safe to say then that you've been bitten quite severely by the spoon bug? I've only worked with small pieces of Huon but the surface left after using an edged tool on them is just sublime, so I can totally see your spoon problem only getting worse with these knives.

Haha! Well it’s just another challenge I guess, I can see myself sitting on a deck whittling away in the early morning fog somewhere.
I am on the lookout for some fresh fruit wood now, will have to hit up some of my arborist friends. The Huon is wonderful to carve, I have a bit of a stash of it and the smell of the cut timber is fantastic. Can’t wait to get stuck into it!!
    Cheers Cal

I have a stack of apple tree pieces, been laying around 3 years now, your welcome to if you want.
I plan on visiting Ade around end of April.
I would love to grow my own food, but I can not find bacon seeds

    Very nice.
A great journey to start on.
I hope to make some spoons one day and fully expect to get 'bitten by the bug'.

Nice work. I'm looking to see if I cannot CNC a spoon and learn double sided machining as well. Its been an idea I had since I left Adelaide and only now am I almost ready to consider it.

Someone gave me some nice wood a while ago that I think will work nicely for this. It's still waiting for the perfect use.
