    Default Ideas for CD/DVD racks

I have finally built an entertainment centre that my wife has been on at me to make for about five years. (It took me all this time to convince her that I still needed some extra tools to actually make the item)

Anyway, the thing is, now that I have made the unit our CDs will no longer fit nicely onto the shelves as they are still contained in those black CD things that hold about 40 or 50 CDs each. This means that they are too tall as the boxes hold the CDs on their flats and are 15 CDs high plus the gaps between them = about 270mm.
I need some ideas as to how to build something that will do the job properly and look good too

You could do a couple of frames, as in the pictures below where the cd covers form a sort of pop art mosaic . holds 25 each

The trouble with life is there's no background music.

For efficient storage of CDs I prefer to dispense with the black space-filling racks, etc, and use simple shelves. Here are a couple of options:

    1. CD case in cherry
    2. Blackwood CD cabinet
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

My CD rack roles about 800 discs. It's a copy of those cheap CD racks you see that have wide flat MDF uprights and shelves made of three metal tubes.

Mine is roughly 1800mm long and 1000mm tall. There are four uprights of 6"x2" recycled hardwood while the rails are 8mm stainless steel rod (leftovers I got for very cheap from an SS fabricator) - from memory, there are five 'shelves' so 15 lengths in all . The top is a length of old Oz cedar skirting board and there is a 3" square base at the back made from an old timber bridge railing. Weighs a ton and very solid....but unfortunately no longer big enough!!
Ours is not to reason why.....only to point and giggle.

Thanks for the above ideas but I obviously didn't explain myself properly.
    See attached photo.
Well I was going to attach a photo, but my camera battery appears to be dead.
To explain. I have built a cabinet which has adjustable shelves. I can fit two standard CD racks into the cupboard, one on top of the other but this is wasteful of space and only allows me to have the CDs stored flat. I want them to store them vertically.
The size of each cupboard is 690 wide * 650 high * 410 deep. Each cupboard has (at present) three adjustable shelves that are 19mm thick.
So, given those three measurements it is quite difficult to come up with a method of storage that will allow me to see the CD/DVD titles and also store efficiently.
The best I have managed to think of so far is to remove the shelves, install upright dividers and mount the CDs on a sliding rail thingy which then effectively gives me full access to the whole of the space and easy viewing of the titles.

Not sure if those dimensions were internal or external, but here's an idea. If you turn the CDs so the titles are on top, you could make 5 drawers per shelf that would each hold about 40CDs, for a total or 40 x 5 x 4 = 800 CDs. The drawback is that you will only be able to see the titles when you open the drawers --- you'll need a good indexing system.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

Thanks Zen, that is certainly a good idea.
    A couple of points.
How do the "drawers" slide? Are they my original shelves on rails or something else?
If they are the shelves then that would certainly give a good view of the CD spines and a lot of them at once, but how would the CDs stay where they were put? Are you envisaging an actual box of some type?

    ps the measurements were inside

Each drawer could be a long box that simply slides on top of the shelf and is held in place by the drawers each side of it. You'd have to do a detailed drawing to make sure everything would fit. You may end up having to reduce the number of shelves. The CDs would stay put if the drawer was full, otherwise you could include a few dividers, or even a moveable 'bookend' held in place, say, with a rare earth magnet.

If you want fancy drawer slides and such, you may have to allow more room between the drawers, which might limit you to 4 of them per shelf.

The other idea would be to convert each shelf to a single wide drawer. This would be simpler, but then you'd have to include dividers to hold the CDs in place, and a full drawer would probably be quite heavy.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.
