Ideas how to finish this project
Hey all,
I've been thinking of building myself a sideboard type thing for a while, to hold my mini hi-fi and keyboard. I envisioned making it all out of a thick sheet of plywood, so that the layers making up the plywood are on show (you can see in the attached 3D render that I've thrown together).
The problem is, I'm not sure how I could finish it off.. As in, I can't figure out what would be good to do for the legs. Also, I'm a little worried that it's going to look really 70's-ish..
Can anyone offer some advice for ways I could finish the design off? Or even if it's looking completely terrible and I should abandon it completely.
The materials that I plan to use are from Bunnings:
Plywood:http://www.bunnings.com.au/2440-x-12...ywood_p0390172
Soft-closer drawer slide: http://www.bunnings.com.au/king-slid...slide_p4020348
The dimensions will be:
1220mm wide (to reduce the number of cuts I need - just use the width of the plywood sheet that I buy)
450mm deep
(shelf with keyboard) 730mm off the ground
(shelf for mini hi-fi) 930mm off the ground
Here are the renders that I've put together.
The edging:

The basic top part, with the shelf closed

A base shelf that could be added for stoage/strength. This shelf will be around 10cm from the floor (no reason for that height, just a number that I picked)

Thanks heaps,
Denno

Hi Denno,
I agree that legs would not look 'right'.
I guess I'm a bit asymmetric so I can see a vertical box the same proportions as the horizontal box and set at about 1/3 from the left.
This would require the horizontal box to also be fixed to the wall but I doubt that would be a problem.
Your design reminds me of an episode of Grand Designs where an Australian cabinet maker living in London built a very creative pair of houses and the 'built-in' furniture was made of ply with the laminations being both visible and a design feature,

Thanks for the reply fletty.
Is this the kind of thing you were thinking?

I really quite like the idea.
I can't make it the same height as the horizontal one is wide, because I want to be able to pull up a chair and play the keyboard.
Perhaps I could make the vertical one a little wider (in that render it's only ~186mm), and then put some shelves/draws in there?
This is definitely what my aim was for posting here, some different ideas from my stock standard 4 legs and a shelf

that's exactly what I was thinking......but I didn't think of the knee space SO how about the vertical box butts onto the end of the horizontal box and its end is flush with the top of the horizontal box?

I don't think knee space will be too much of a problem, because the keyboard will be on the slide out shelf, which will come out 450mm.. So I think leg room will be fine .

Hello denno020,
I was looking at the design for your HiFi/keyboard item, and I was wondering what you were using for a slide out mechanism. If you were going to put full extension slides laid flat underneath the shelf, you will need to consider that the load carrying capacity is greatly reduced from what it is usually rated. Alternatively use some concealed drawer slides.
You could use some metal table legs to support the upper unit.
The rendered drawings make a big difference to understand what you want to achieve
