Default Anyone imported a table saw from the US?

    Hi All
I am looking at buying a table saw and wood love to get the Powermatic PM2000 or the Jet Deluxe saws. The prices in the US are much cheaper, and I have found some stores than are willing to sell it to me.

My question is how to get it into the country, how much is shipping (by sea), cost of customs etc. I need to work out the total cost to see if it is better to just buy locally.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

The cost of shipping should kill your idea plus the fact that USA uses 110 v Australia 240v.

I picked up a sander from Grizzly in the USA last year of a type that I couldn't get here in Aus. What a nightmare. First the shipping was going to be nearly a thousand dollars, luckily we had a family connection who could get us a big discount but it still cost more than twice the value of the machine. Then when I got the thing home it turned out to be 110 volt (although specified at point of sale as 240 volt) so now it will need to be rewired before I can use it. All up... machine $200, shipping $570, rewiring $350...
Next time I will ring every machinery dealer in Australia to see if I can get one of them to procure the machine for me first. I would be very reluctant to import anything without lots of research.

    Hi All
The saws come with a 230V motor, so power supply should not be an issue.
I have found Ocean freight USA who can ship from LA to Adelaide and only charge 350US, still cheaper than what is on offer here?

    Hi Len
Thanks for the info. Assuming the motor rating is not an issue, which is what is said on the webpages, did you have any other problems in shipping, customs etc.

    Thanks

I know this isnt wood related, but I race downhill mountain bikes and imported a race frame into australia late last year.

The frame in austalia cost $5000 retail.

I was able to find it online for $3000 AUD
    Postage was $300
I had to pay GST of $300 and then tax of $340. So I save just over $1000. Well worth doing.

Tax rates differ from product to product. Also remember that you dont pay tax or GST if its under $1000 total.

Sure its not 230V three phase? I think that is their standard over there 119V single phase and 230V three phase.

No, they offer both 3hp and 5hp in 1Phase power at 230V.

Also they run 60 Hz over there we run 50 Hz make sure the motor is a true 50Hz motor or it will make noises.

I think that the Woodman group import the Powermatic range, may be worth them taking all the worry.

I will check that. I believe the US version Powermatic PM2000 is the same as that sold here, so the motor should be fine?

True, but they want $3500 for the saw, which is more than I wanted to spend. I also need to include delivery to Adelaide as well.
