inbuilt wood fire
i bought a steel firebox from Gumtree (open wood fire) that needs to be built in as we don't have an existing chimney. I'm thinking that Hardies compressed sheet fixed to a timber frame would be the way to go but can't seem to find definitive instructions.(even using screws to fix this to a wood frame would transfer heat) Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news
1 There are very strict regulations covering the installation of fire places, BCA aka NCC (National Construction Code) which have just had a substantial update of everything.
2 It can ONLY be installed by someone who is licensed and accredited
3 If its not done correctly and by a a licensed and qualified person, your house and contents insurance is null and void and in the event of a catastrophe you will be held liable in a court of law.
4 You may have bought it off gumtree but if it doesn't comply with current specs it is a NO GO.
5 It has to be inspected approved by the local council and/or certifying authority
My advice DONT DO IT, if you doubt me, contact the local council building inspectorThe person who never made a mistake never made anything
Cheers
Ray

Wow! Very definate advice. I really appreciate it. We have a plan in at the council on a seperate issue so I will run this past the planing people just to see if there is a way to fix this. Otherwise I think that this is probably sound advice that I would be well advised to follow. Thanks again, Ian

Hebel
We had a Jetmaster wood fire insert installed and used a timber frame + plasterboard design but it had Hebel block walls (100mm) surrounding the insert.
Check out the "Downloads" section of the Jetmaster universal insert page: Universal Inserts >> Jetmaster

Not all Councils are equal. The rules on fire installs depends whether the Council's EPA lists it as COMPLIANCE or EXEMPT. If compliance is required it must be done through Council approval. If exempt, it can be done by anybody provided it meets the Standards.
