Default an interview with Thomas LN

I'm sure everyone that shops at Highland hardware has seen this already, but for those that haven't:

he seems down to earth, and has good ideas. I especially identified with his ideas of spending time on woodworking skill instead of spending money on gadgets.

    cheers.

Ah - but what is the determination of 'gadget', Grasshopper? An LV scrub (have to decide before July 15)? 8" Jointer? Or is he talking about one of those whatsits for guiding your saw for dovetails? A full set of HNT Gordon planes? Leigh Jig? Independance saw?

    Very subjective word, methinks.

    Just quoting Thomas Lie-Nielsen:

"I've never liked gimmicky gadgets. They are no substitute for learning basic skills. Part of the pleasure of woodworking is developing those skills and using them. I much prefer the elegant simplicity of a properly-designed, well-made tool."

No wonder he is more Norwegian than a Yank.

    Thanks Ryan.

Yes....I agree.....I mean who knows what was really being said........the effects of chinese whispers and all.........I mean, it probably was just a conversation about sexual toys and him implying 'you don't really NEED them' to have a good time.......and through word of mouth it slowly changed to a woodwork topic........bet my left testicle on it ..

Could this be a new way to fettle and tune your new LN
If I do not clearly express what I mean, it is either for the reason that having no conversational powers, I cannot express what I mean, or that having no meaning, I do not mean what I fail to express. Which, to the best of my belief, is not the case.

    lucky you,
Saw a lovely full set of HNTs in (Aussie ?) ebony at the wood show.
But those Independence saws are very nice.

Now the way I figure it, a full set of HNTs would cost about the same as two or three Leigh jigs, so why not go for a set of Independence saws (tennon, carcass, dovetail) and the LV scrub?

are we wishing you happy birthday for the 15th?

    Ryan,

Thanks for that. He does seem like a "good bloke" doesn't he!

All I have to do now is save up for the LN "gimme the lot" sale

    Cheers!

Hey, might be simpler than sharpening the blade, but somehow methinks he might just have thought of that

    Cheers!
