Thread: I've decided to shout myself a couple of new plane blades.

From what little i know, the two names i hear pop up most often for replacement blades are either ones by Ron Hock or veritas PMV11

I have bought Ron Hock blades from Dieter Schmidt in Germany without drama. Good prices and service.

I've been scarred by some disappointing overseas purchases and not sure I can through the anxiety again.
I guess are too small a market for someone here apart from Carbatec to be selling plane blades.

Like many others I can highly recommend Veritas PM-V11 blades especially when combined with the matching Veritas chip-breaker. There are however two issues to take into account:

1: Cost. If buying in Australia you will pay a premium price for each item. Carbatec don’t onsell them as a set and of course you have shipping. You will save about 20% buying direct from Lee Valley, including having them shipped to your door.

2: Availability. Since COVID hit the supply chain to LV has been hit with major problems; this of course blows out to the resellers. Even purchasing direct from LV has been problematic…. as part of a group buy I put in an order last March. Had they actually got the order right (a tale for another thread) they finally would have turned up in July, 16 months later! As it is I’m not expecting the balance to be shipped out until after mid-september at the very earliest

Keep an eye out though for Australian made Stanley HSS tipped blades; these are actually very good and although they stopped being manufactured late in the last century they still pop up on Ebay etc in unopened packaging. You’ll also see Australian made Titan HSS blades too but their QA was a little on the ordinary side and usually have hollow backs due to poor grinding. They’re ok though if you want to put a 5-degree or higher back-bevel for cranky timbers.

Try the Woodworks in Sydney might have some.

I have also had some disappointments, but Dieter is one of the good guys. His product descriptions/recommendations are brutally honest; can be relied upon.

Too hard or too expensive? Ron Hock have an extensive choice of replacement blades.
They deal with international orders in the normal course of business.
Placed an order for 2 blades some 2 years ago and received them in good time, without any issue.

If you decide to buy from the Woodworks make sure you read their google reviews first.
I won't use them again as my experience mirrors most of the complaints on google.

Chief Tiff, I will keep an eye out for those Stanley HSS tipped blades.

In the meantime I emailed Hock Tools last night and asked about lead times. Ron himself responded - or someone calling themselves Ron. He said that shipping anything anywhere in the world has become more expensive and can take ages.

He steered me toward that company a few of you mentioned: Contact us woodworksupplies.com.au

I've ordered two blade and breaker sets. A 2 inch ($164) and a 2 3/8 inch ($170) made from the very impressively named Cryogenic A2 steel.

I'll report back on the experience.

There was a bloke here who apparently used to bring them in and resell them, but he's retired.

Those plane blades and breakers I ordered last Tuesday showed up today.
Gee, they're solid.
Even the breakers have a edge on them sharp enough to cut paper.
Now, given I have never had a brand new blade, what would be the regime I should follow to bring them into commission?
