As it was always pot luck in the past prior to the new scheme. More than once I have brought in stuff worth way more that $1000 and was never charged duty on it. If a vendor OS chooses to be part of the new scheme then I guess the goverment get their money but it seems slightly ridiculous to think that every retail source OS that exports $75k to Oz every year has been located or put their hands up to be part of it. I bet the majority of the worlds retailers know nothing of it at all. Since June 30 I have paid zero entry duty, I rarely buy from Ebay or Amazon so their approach does not worry me in the least as I prefer to buy directly from a supplier.

So then it certainly seems that GST is not being charged once within Au for packages under $1k. I haven't heard of anyone being charged yet, unless by the overseas vendor. The way it was written always seemed that way to me and at least for now it is playing out that way. So just stick to sub $75k exporters if possible.

    Cheers, Dom

    Yep, all agreed.

It was processed properly Doug. There will be no extra GST collected at the gate. The only extra GST is coming from vendors who decide to register, and Bad Axe would be lucky to do $75k worldwide, let alone to Australia. That would be about 150 hand made saws per year.....3 per week.....

The worst part is that many things just can't be sourced here and Amazon AU is a joke with prices as much as 60 times greater than on the US site.

Not kidding on the price differential!!!!!!

My ShopNShip out of New York is being hammered.

One simply can't buy the stuff here. Avalable US? Yep. Available Europe? Yep. Australia? Hahahaha.

I've been emailing the manufacturers directly, plus the local distributors here, on 4 things this fortnight alone (OK, one was for car detailing stuff).... They 100% have NOT RESPONDED. Not. One.

I'd name names, but it's against the rules, but these are prominent brands with large ranges.

Times must be outstanding for them. They can afford to ignore customers asking to buy something locally (!!!!).

You know what my thoughts are? (If "frack them" came to mind, you are spot on).

This whole "GST will save us from The Evils of overseas" is a complete case of diversionary BS. It is NOTHING more than a widely coordinated attempt at MARKET PROTECTIONISM.

    GST, my ass.

On eBay I’ve noticed a trend where the location for the seller is stated as “Darwin NT” but when you receive the item it’s always from China post.
BTW the items from there have been (censored) ! not to name names.

Maybe they can’t be bothered with Australia and we are just nuisance value ?

i remember my brother in law went to a trade show in Germany and they were not interested in doing business with Australia as it was too small a market and not worth the trouble

Maybe Amazon are reading my posts! The variety of products has positively exploded this week.

I'm also a Prime member and the number of US purchases now on offer jumped significantly.

BTW, I still haven't heard back from any of those 4 Australian resellers/distributors. I re-emailed them and narrowed the enquiry to ensure my needs were obvious.... bupkis.

You would suspect that the original reason for Amazon not shipping to Oz was a bit of a furphy if Prime members can still buy from the US.

Evan, do they make a point of being able to buy from Amazon US as a benefit of being a Prime member?

I don't know. I can see your point however.

The Prime has already saved me money. My wife is having chemo for a brain tumour so getting out is infrequent and quick. On Amazon I've bought things like 48 packs of TP, 24 rolls of paper towel, sandpapers, tools and bulk cleaning products .The cost of the yearly fee is already repaid in the free delivery.

The last few weeks have given me a lot of spare internet time, so I spend it building lists of things I "need". I've noticed the list of stuff on AU Amazon is growing daily, as is their list of US product.

Prime also gives you free post from the USA, but there is a minimum spend of au$50 to obtain it.... Easy to do

Amazon US is also doing free international shipping for purchases over 75 USD for things that are supplied by Amazon. I had quite a few things shipped to NZ recently

Well it may be that goods are being added to the local arm of amazon, but it is terribly expensive to do business via the Australian site.

Below is what you can purchase from Australia, below that is what these exact same things cost from the American site.

Earlier this year, I happened to purchase the 1" and 2" roughing gouge kit direct from Amazon USA, delivered to my door for $105.00 AUD. Compare that to the amazon Australian site price of $248.48 AUD delivered to my door.

The USA picture below does actually state delivery to Australia, however I just tested that possibility and was met with a refusal when I wished to check out.

I also purchased the 3 spindle gouge kit with a landed price of around $84.00 AUD delivered to my door in June this year before they closed the door. Compared to the Australian site where the exact same goods would cost me $312.48 the USA site is wonderful. I haven't purchased anything from them since they closed the overseas door.

OAM, has anyone with friends/family in retail? Anyone can give you a "vibe" as to how ordinary retail sales are tracking?

My daughter say her store is doing very well (she discusses it endlessly every night!)... but I'm reading some very interesting things on investor forums that contradict this.

Also, BTW, I was just on our favourite whipping boy Amazon and noticed the number of US branded products for car detail/repair (I do a lot of this for fun) has absolutely exploded. Everything, inc pressurised cans (i.e. the nasty stuff)
