    Default Kintaro Yazawa's Keyhole joint

I've spent the last few weeks on and off thinking about the Keyhole joint Traditional Japanese Work by Kintaro Yazawa: Trick Joint Box: Key Hall Joint Box and how it might go together. With a bit of time on Friday and Saturday I set out the joint and cut it out with hand tools. Then the moment of truth tapping it together. Would it go together? Here are some photos of the final joint. No info on the in-between. I put some metho on to highlight the joint.
Yesterday I sent all the photos to Yazawa-san and received this very generous reply. I don't know if I've got another three joints in me to make a box, time will tell.

    Dear Mihael,

    Congratulations!
You are the first person to complete my keyhole joint.
I am so glad to see your joint work!
    Great job!
Please make a new joint work and show it to me.
    Thank you for your mail.
    Kintaro

And done with Toona no less. That's a wood that I find highly vexing to dovetail, it's so soft & wants to crumble rather than cut even with the sharpest of chisels! I dips me lid to you, squire...

    Cheers,
    IW

    Very very impressive
    Well done
And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.

    Cheers,
The main problem is not causing any bruising right on the shoulder, but a good sharp marking knife slices across those fibres so at least the outside of the joint is clean and sharp. Still a squire, sigh.

I'm confused! Which ones are the pins and which ones are the tails?

The pins are the square pegs and the tails are the round pegs

Great; it’s 10 o’clock at night and now my brain is trying to work out how you did it…
