Laminating external timber columns
I have aquired a heap of second-hand timber and wish to laminate the timbers to make external columns with a clear finish to highlight the different colours . I am seeking advice in three areas.
1. Recommendations on suitable exterior bonding products?
2. Possible solutions for timber treatment (Fungus & Termites)?
3. Suitable clear external coatings
I have made an experimental column with two 120x50 rich red hardwoods either side of a light white coloured 120x20 timber bonded with two-pack epoxy. Turned out great however, I need to ensure the timber will last long term as they are to be used as external verandah columns in an old queenslander.
The timber was sized in my planer before assembly.
Regards, Fred.

Glue
Hi Fred,
My standard practice for gluing up timber.
If you can get heaps of pressure on the glue joint. Then use resorcinol glue. Thats the black line you see on marine plywood.
If you can't get heaps of pressure then use expoxy always.
If you are going to see the glue joint and you are going to varnish then most likely go the epoxy.
Epoxy can fill gaps where as resorcinol can't. But don't try and squeeze all the expoxy out your jointe either.
As for varnsih, i really like 2 pack as it dries super fast and you can get heaps of coats in one day. I use Mirotone its not cheap but it drys and reading to sand in about 20 minutes so you can get all your coats on pretty much in one day.
Down side, the sun really knock any clear coat product. So you have to keep at it and that can be a pain. Maybe you are best to look at some of the oil finishs as you can slap a coat on each year without a lot of mucking around.
