    Default Legs for Console Desk

I'm making a console desk for my son to do his homework on, with the carcass made from some nice baltic birch ply with splay legs in white oak. The general shape will be something like this:

With the legs a bit more like this in shape:

The bit I'm puzzling over is the best way to attach the legs, which isn't particularly straightforward because:

    • I'm not using stretchers/apron across the front or back
    • The legs are splayed outward in both directions
    • The legs will be angled towards the corners (as they are in the second pic).

    Anyone have any cunning ideas?

This type of thing wouldn't help?

Probably wouldn't work with the leg profile I have planned. Do you know what they're called?

They were on Hammersmith. Here's a screenshot from their blog.

Awesome! Would try something similar with this soon. Great stuff.

I think I've worked out a way to do it. Bit hard to explain, but will post pics of it when I make it...

Thought I had better update this now the desk is (almost) finished

I ended up attaching the legs to shaped blocks using angled bridle joints a bit like this...

...and then gluing and screwing them to the bottom of the carcass. I decided to glue them as I was worried about the strength of a screw-only joint against side loads.

I'll post a pic of the completed project tomorrow.
