    Default rafter length

Hi i was after some help in getting a rafter length,i am building a pergola and want to obtain a rafter length from the hancocks roofing book.i want to finish the rafters flush to the top of the side beams instead of on top with a birdsmouth, is it a matter of measuring the span to the inside of the beams instead of the outside

Came across this post as I have similar issue trying to work out rafter size for 5m single span.

    I came across a pergola span table that says a 190 x 45 rafter at 900mm spacing has a max length of 5.2 m for F5, 5.6m for F7 and 5.8m for MGP10.
Does this sound about right? Some other tables I have found have conflicting info.

here's a link to the pergola span table:

    A couple of other questions.....

My pergola will just run off the house (straight roof 3.7m high at house end and 2.2m high at the bottom end) and will be 9 x 5m and covered in laserlite.
The bottom end beam will be 240 x 45 held up by 90 x 90 posts. The rafters will be mounted inside the beam (not on top) so that I can put a gutter on the outside of the beam.

The house's hidden gutter has a hardwood fascia board underneath it (guessing about 140 x 45) - can I just put joist hangers into this board to hold the rafters?

the pergola area is surrounded by a brick retaining wall - Can I dynabolt my post stirrups straight into the retaining wall, is that an acceptable footing?

Here's a rough drawing of what I want to do, does is sound plausible?

    Cheers,
