    Default Links to Blogs

Ive noticed lately that some users will post a partial thread or an update and maybe a pic or two then put in a link to visit their blog etc.

Personally I'm now finding that I don't open those threads now, as I prefer to just open the thread, scroll through it and then follow it if anyone replies etc, whereas those that link to blogs, you can't follow unless you subscribe to them, which means more emails, notifications or web links blah blah.

What are your thoughts regarding this?
    Cheers

    DJ

I haven't looked at a blog on here for at least a year or more now.
    Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

Have to agree with you DJ, it seems that those people are using this, and other forums purely to generate hits on their blogs.

Sort of takes the idea of a forum away doesn't it?

I think it is one thing to have a link to your blog in your signature, quite another to post a "teaser" post with the briefest of description and perhaps 1 picture.

    What is the problem?
I am one person who does exactly that: I post a leader on the appropriate forum for those that are interested to follow up at their leisure on my BLOG
If you are not interested, then you don't have to wade through oceans of text and up to a dozen pictures.
If you are interested, then it is one click of your mouse to have a look.
If you don't want to have a look then don't click the link.

    Cheers

Since you ask SG, one problem is that if/when your blog disappears (yes it does happen for one reason or another) this forum is left with a bunch of cryptic threads that go absolutely nowhere.

The other problem is that people then cannot really respond to your post here and it becomes a one-way "conversation".

Another thing, this link thing is of course a two-way street, isn't it? You do at least acknowledge the Woodwork Forums with a link in your blog, as they are the source of a fair chunk of your blog traffic. Or is this simply a one-way street?

This forum has always taken the view that unless a reciprocal link to WWF is placed on their site people placing links to their site on WWF are liable to have their links removed from here.
    "What's the problem with that???"

    Go visit my BLOG Fred.
You will find the link to WWF for all to see.

You will find plenty of evidence on this forum of respondents to my posts, who have continued to discuss the issues on this Forum. See the latest one here:
    https://www.woodworkforums.com/f152/u...9/#post1481629

To my mind, and obviously to those who value both the blog and the forum, there is much that the Forum gains from these links to my blog.

    Cheers

I think the fact that he calls it a "leader" shows its not an informational post on this forum but an advertisement for himself.

I see you haven't addressed the issue of potential "orphaned" threads here on WWF Tom.

You say that WWF gains from your blog? Please explain the benefit to WWF to me, I can see you and your blog gain enormously from the traffic generated by WWF, how does WWF gain from all this?

I finally found the tiny link to WWF right at the bottom of your blog page, virtually unnoticable to a casual browser.

Fred, the internet is a dynamic thing. No-one can guarantee the longevity of any links provided in any post. This includes many things other than blog links.
How many business links, advertising links, sponsors links etc are still on the Forum that were there ten years ago?
Yes there will be some, but others will disappear - it is a fact of internet life.
If I kark it tomorrow, my blog will cease - true.
But the same can be said for any other links.
I will do my best not to kick the bucket tomorrow .....
You understand what I am saying - I am sure ......

In my view there is nothing wrong with people having a link to their website, blog or whatever in their signature.

It is when they post what you call a "leader" that I have a problem. As _fly_ said above that is no longer sharing information on the forum, that is all about generating traffic for one's blog and is against the spriti of a forum where people share information.

I am not just talking about your blog SG, there are quite a few people now doing this, but you are the one that brought up your blog specifically.

As I said above, I can see how you gain from this, I can't see how the forum gains from it, you saying it is so doesn't make it so.

The last post that I initiated on the Woodwork General Forum was under Big Stuff:
    https://www.woodworkforums.com/f187/n...abinet-150725/
This was a piece that I built and shared on the Forum.
I gave a link to my BLOG because it contained all the details of the construction.
The Forum benefits from this IMHO.
It was too long to fit comfortably on the Forum - 10 blog pages, near 100 pictures and loads of text.
Lots of people read that post - 473 - as lots of people have read my other posts.

Again, I will repeat, if you don't want to read it - no one is forcing you to.

Not quite entirely correct, it has had 473 views of which at least 3 those views have been you but in all likelihood you've viewed it 5 or more to follow it when new replies were made.

To be fair he does give a full explanation of how and what he's building and that helps some of us not fall into some traps. Guess that puts him somewhere between a sponsor and the rest of us. But how far along that line I'll leave to others.
