Looking for some sort of monitor lifting mechanism
I have a desk that I'd like to bring into the modern era. It's great if all you still only write letters by hand...
What I have in mind is to add a compartment to the back that houses a monitor that can be raised and lowered. I don't want a motorised mechanism - they're stupidly expensive. So looking for something that utilises a gas strut and framework that holds the monitor in whatever position I want it in...
I've looked at monitor arms but they're not going to work as they swing in an arc. I want something that moves straight up and down.
Anyone know of such a mechanism?

You could try googling 'sewing machine lift mechanisms.'
Probably not as adjustable as you'd like and I'd imagine most would be overkill for just a monitor, but I'd be surprised if you didn't find something that may be of benefit

Having just last night put a new regulator in my Falcon ute I had to laugh at your idea.
That being said it could work and you wouldn’t be working through holes in the sheet metal skin of the door
Google replacing window regulator and stuff will come up on YouTube.
Mine cost $90, two daze delivery. Well made except two 6mm holes not tapped.
The original marked 2008 was made in China also.
Passenger side so lasted 16 years.

Convert a stand-up desk riser? HERE is a cheapo one from Officeworks; Aldi often have them as well for about $80. These ones are a simple scissor action; straight up and down. More expensive versions use parallelogram mechanisms that bring the "desk" towards you as well as up.
I use standing desks at both work and in my home office.Nothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.

Maybe something like this? Truth Awning Winder | Vantage Hardware | AWS Australia
I don't know if 370mm travel will be enough for you though.

You could make a version of a vertical sash window. A couple pulleys at the top of a pair of boxes with sash weights inside. The monitor attached to plywood that does the sliding in the frame. Get the weights right and the monitor will lift up and down and stop and stay in any position you put it. When the monitor is down a picture on the wall could be framed by the box frame. The frame could be wall mounted or attached to the desk.

Plenty of computer monitor arms that will lift vertical but will depend on how far you need to lift and the area that is available for the device:
Brateck Steell Track-Mounted Monitor Holder Fit Screen 13″-27″ Up to 8kg – Brateck
https://brateck.com.au/product/mabt-lds-22t01/
Brateck Single Screen Vertical Lift Monitor Stand Fit Most 17″-27″ Monitor Up to 6 kg per screen – Brateck
Some of the arms that move in an arc can also be set up for simple vertical movement

Brateck LDT81-C012-B NOTEWORTHY HEAVY-DUTY GAS SPRING MONITOR ARM For most 17″~49″ Monitors, Fine Texture Black (new) – Brateck
Or if you want

That is just one manufacturer, plenty of others with options but really need information about dimensions of the desk and what you want to achieve.

i'm trying to work out how this would work?
so you're going to use it as a standing desk with the monitor that pops up vertically from behind the desk? if you're going to sit at the desk and have the monitor up top it will do you neck in, in about 5 minutes of use.
I think the biggest hurdle you'll find is that no off the shelf vesa mount just don't have enough adjustment in them to raise and lower the full height of a monitor... as you normally don't need that much adjustment. so now you're probably going to have to look at custom making something using either gas struts etc.
I know you said ridiculously expensive but for $178 you can get this motorised fella
VEVOR 220V Automatical TV Lift Bracket with Remote Controller 28" for Home Use | VEVOR AU
I personally think something like that is going to be ALOT less hassle then jerry rigging something up. Most monitor arms are going to set you back around the $100 mark anyway
