Trade Tools, even Supacheap often have solid, straight levels in the longer sizes at very reasonable cost.

Thanks all for your suggestions. I ended up going with the expensive option. Even though the price was high, I can tell what I bought is extremely solid and of very high quality.

If you are using a 1.5m rule (the expensive option), check whether it is magnetic or not, it will most likely that it be if it is SS, if possible borrow a couple of magnetic welders corner clamp things from the metal dept if you have one when trying to set up the jointer. They will do a good job of positioning the rule face vertical on the outfeed table while you adjust things. If not possible, a couple of solid hardwood blocks clamped to the rule will achieve a similar end.
Are you conversant with the adjustments possible on the machine, and the sequence to get sorted in, in order to get everything spot on. You might also need a decent sized engineers square or angle box to set the stops for the fence angles etc.I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

Good tip on the magnets. Wouldn't have thought of that.
I've been following this video from The Wood Whisperer for advice. The machine is different but the idea is the same. I'll have a hunt around for some more that could help. The manual doesn't offer much apart from raising and lowering the tables. The jointer itself has a few allen key adjustments for the tables. It'll just take some time to learn the machine.

I found the article on jointer setup in Shopnotes No 78 (google it ) quite instructive for setting up an old style cast iron 6" jointer, but I'm not sure how appropriate the tips would be for your monster.
