This was my score from a deceased estate listing on gumtree. Listed as free firewood.
Vic ash, white ash, redgum, spotted gum, ironbark, a nice bit of walnut and even some curly maple.
There was a huge pile of rotting timber in the yard, so took some picking to find the good bits... still, not bad for a free pickup. Most of this will be made into serving/cutting boards.

I used to make out similarly when I was a member of the woodworkers guild... Often - offcuts from cabinetry and casework projects are plenty large for guitar components...

I'm glad I don't live in an effluent area .... ..... couldn't stand the smell. Spell check???
Though in line with the OP, while in Melbourne to visit AWTEX in 2010 we happened to be driving around in a small hire car on kerbside pick up day. Always the way lots of "good stuff" when you can't do anything with it. Bit difficult brining it back to FNQ as excess baggage.Mobyturns

You teasing? Or just trying to rub salt in our wounds Wynterplace? Nearly crying looking at that pic.

Legit free pick right there. The pile was mostly rubbish, lots of rotting softwoods and ply... but some decent bits of skirting, weather boards and a few gems like the maple and walnut.
Turned the walnut into a serving board this morning, and knocked up a cutting board using some of the ash and a bit of pine.
Need to sand some of the router burn off the walnut before oiling, but it's got some nice grain and colour.
The maple I'm saving to make a trinket box for my daughter when I get better with fine tolerance pieces... I'm still a hack.

I'm digging this thread up again for a bit of a brag post... I just scored this pile of furniture timber from a mate. Leftovers from student projects at his work. Walnut, oak, white ash, jarrah, spotted gum, more walnut... And some pretty big pieces too!

Good score Wynterplace! At first I thought you had them neatly stacked in some kind of bracket on the wall. But then I realised that photo is just rotated at 90°

Finding timber is always good. I picked up a 026 Still chainsaw in the hard rubbish a few years ago.. It is still running fine.
I am learning, slowley.

Not sure why the pic rotated when I used the imgur link... It was the right way around.
I also picked up a tonne of saw blades, most are too big for my little Makita MLT100, so i'll be offloading them to anyone that wants them at a good price. Most are 300mm crosscut blades.

you should just offload the Makita saw and get one that can use the blades

Here in Geelong we don't have them However when I was in Melbourne years ago the best suburbs were old and not posh. Got some wonderful antiques, some got dusted off and strait to auction, others stayed with me and more damaged/incomplete pieces supplied oak,red cedar, jarrah, etc as well as fittings, handles, locks etc. Really miss the good ones especially the holy grail of old man shed clean outs

I was at the refuse transfer station yesterday and a bloke was throwing out a radial arm saw, said it goes but drops a phase. Got it home, checked out the tilts, slides, rotation of head, all good. Need to give the motor a look at and a new blade.

"Refuse transfer station"??? I hate to think how much money the person who thought up that name is being paid... What was wrong with "tip" or "dump"?
Good find BTW! Hope you can sort out the missing phase.
