I love kerbside pick-up days...
My wife spotted this "firewood" while out walking the dog yesterday:
Timber1.JPG Timber2.JPG Timber3.JPG
I think it's Merbau and the piece on the right has now been through the thicknesser. It's now 140 x 25 x 1700 and doesn't have any nail holes or other defects. There were seven pieces of this, some longer some shorter, but all in great condition. There were also four pieces of more substantial timber (I think treads from an external staircase). I think it's a real pity that stuff like this will usually end up as landfill.

A couple of years ago I was working in Belmont, one of the businesses decided to dump 2 skip bins worth of 18mm melamine slabs. I suspect it was due to an manufacturing error, as all the pieces had been cut but none had any screw/nail holes etc.
So after my shift I came back and started picking out all the bits that would fit into my car, after about 2 hours (at 11pm) of packing i decided to call it a night. Have made loads of shelving, jigs, boxes etc with it and still have quite abit of it left.

I've now processed all the wood. Five of the seven pieces are unused (apart from exposure to the weather) and even the two pieces with nail holes had been denailed.
What a bargain!

That's a really nice score, enough in there to make a small cabinet.

It's kerbside pickup next week here (SW Brisbane) but people are putting there stuff out already.
I walk for about 2 hours each day before work but people on my walk route must has lesser quality rubbish than Tccp 123 neighbours. No good timber on my circuit.
Might see some better timber as next Monday (Pick up day) approaches.

...but I shouldn't be greedy. It's Kenmore/Chapel Hill. There's plenty for everyone!

Oh how I wish our council would agree to regular kerbside pickup days. Sigh!

Not quite "firewood," but many years ago, I worked in an office in the Port of Tacoma, Washington. There was a millwork shop along the way to and from work. Every afternoon they piled a haystack-sized pile of mahogany offcuts in their parking lot. After a few weeks I had enough material to build a sofa and chair in sort of segmental construction.
Much later, in Tallahassee, I found a small electric concrete mixer. The "donor" even helped me load it in my truck. I had to repair one of the cracked pulleys, and build a belt cage, but I've used it for several concrete projects.
Cheers,

We don't have kerbside pickup here, but what people put out and it disappears very quickly, should go to the tip, lounges, TVs, anything but good stuff Mind you, where I live is not the effluent area of Murray Bridge.

You don't have to live in a well-off suburb to benefit from what gets discarded on these kerb pick-up days. Just "shop" there .
In the week leading up to the 'pick up day' it's common for utes and trailers to patrol the streets looking for a 'bargain'. This benefits everyone. Stuff gets recycled and the council has less to dispose of so it's a win/win.
Apart from the Merbau above I also got a trailer load of "ex pergola" which I have since cut into bite size bits that will provide heating for at least the next winter. This would otherwise have ended up as land-fill.
