LVL F17 beam on external wall
I'm in the process of Installing a large window in a weatherboard home. I’m doing it as an owner builder, and have a permit, and it requires a 290x45 F17 lintel. Can I use a LVL f17 for this ? I've read that lvl's are not suitable for exterior use. It will be covered by weatherboards, so does that make it ok, or should I use F17 solid hardwood. I'm not worried about the cost, I was just thinking
a 5metre lvl would be a lot lighter and easier to lift than a solid f17. Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers

F17 is the structural rating so as long as it is f17 it doesn't matter what material it is.
Provided you're going to use builders wrap under the weatherboards (blue paper or whatever is its proper name) them it's fine. Lvls can be used outside provided they have been treated for it (h3 above ground or h4 into ground), but as yours is clad then it won't be exposed to the elements, thus not classified as 'external'
Pretty sure this info is on the money but some of the more knowledgeable builders/chippies our there may wish to chime in"All the gear and no idea"
