| |  Maloof inspired low back dining chair.
Early in 2011 I purchased from Highland Woodworking in America a plan package produced by Charles Brock. I have now managed to get to the sculpting stage of the first of six chairs for a new dining suite that I have been planning for the past few years....can't rush these things. I have photographed each stage of the project and thought that I would share a unique challenging experience.
The first pair of chairs will be made from camphor laurel collected over many years and in a very dry state so the first few pics show the stash and some of the milling required.
Full size templates came with the package and I traced these to "backing paper" and pasted them to 3mm MDF and then shaped them on a band saw ready for transfer to the milled stock.
The last of the attached photos is what I hope to achieve !! (to be continued) |

Having milled a selection of timber to 100x50mm suitable for the seat and legs I proceeded to cooper the seat at 3 degrees (#10) cut the recess for both the front and back legs in the seat on the table saw (#1 &2) as well as do the initial shaping of the seat segments on the bandsaw (#3) and power tools prior to joining with biscuits (shaping #2) |

Thanks for posting this. It's a very interesting endeavor. I've met Charles at a couple of different events. He's a very nice, approachable and interesting person.
I look forward to your progress on these chairs.

I hope that my chair turns out as good as the Rocker that you did in 2006 Wonga.....all the shaping and sanding is the main time consumer....cheers Kerry |

After recessing the front legs I then profiled the rear legs on the band saw and cut the seat rebate by using double sided tape to attach a stabilising support (pic#1) and used the table saw sled (#2) using a 12mm rebate bit on the seat a a 12mm round over bit on the leg, had trouble here as for some reason I had to reshape the round over to fit (maybe one was 12mm and the other 1/2 inch) anyway managed to get an acceptable tight fit. After shaping each component on the bandsaw did the first dry fit in readiness to start shaping,grinding,rasping sanding etc,etc. I just hope that i have the perseverance to continue with five more if I successfully complete this one. |

Coming along great Kcam.
I bought these same plans last year as well as the Maloof style rocker plans also from Charles Brock, i'm just about to start on the rocker. Can't wait to see how your chairs turn out! |
