Today was the day to do the final glued up assembly having finished sanding all the components to 120 grit with the Makita angle drill and home made sanding pads. The first problem yesterday when taking the chair apart was one screww decided that it just was not coming out, so I had to drill it out,replug the hole ready to take a new screw.Then spent quite a few hours in sanding mode getting the chair ready for final assembly....I had fitted(glued and screwed)the back and front leg on one side placed it on a low support table working out how to hold it to fit the other two legs and somehow knocked it to the floor as I turned around  I head "twang" looked down and the bottom 150mm had snapped off the front leg Calmed down after about 10 minutes unscrewed and pulled apart, found another piece of timber to make another leg....and taking a breather to write this.....Ishould know better  |

Damn damn damn damn.....
Luckily you have not applied the glue yet.
If the leg can break off so easily like that then I am a bit worried the strength of the wood. Is the grain running straight along the leg? |

Thats gotta break your heart when that happens. 
I gotta agree with wongo, its a bit of a worry that it broke in that way, clearly some short grain across the narrow portion of the leg happening there. |

Both front legs have a bit of cranky/burl like grain towards the bottom and I thought that they would have plenty of strength....wrong, both front legs are now being replaced with straight grained sections.....and Wonga, I had applied the glue,screwed and plugged, luckily I managed to get it apart before it had set. The way the chair fell I think that straight grained would have snapped too...a time consuming lesson   |

The second go has turned out a lot better than the first pair and in some way I am happy that the problem arose as on close inspection the first pair may not have lasted the distance. |

Well I have finally spent some time detailing the first of the chairs and may need to re-think the plan to finish 5 more chairs plus the table in my original 2 year time frame.....has been a great learning curve and I should be able to get through the next one fairly quickly  Almost ready to oil the first effort and I will let the pictures tell the story. |

Applied the final coat of Kunos oil this morning and breathed a sign of relief, until the next one anyway.The journey has been fun,frustrating, a massive learning curve but very rewarding. Thanks everyone for your comments.
