Thread: Mantle and surrounds reno WIP

Hi all,

thought I would share a renovation of my living room mantle and surrounds I have been working on for some time now. Some of you helped me with an epoxy issue I had back in June, which was for this mantle.

It's taken me 3 months as I didn't have a lot of time to spend on it (just some evenings + Saturdays I didn't have commitments on) but I'm 90% done now which is nice

Anyway the pictures above are what it was, the things I hated about it were: everything, specifically the bricks, the tiny hearth, the fact the hearth was raised, the tiny mantle and the colour pallete of the whole lot, it just looked dirty all the time.

The plan was to hang concrete sheet around the bricks, paint the whole room a light grey, put 600x600 tiles down as the hearth, Blackheart sassafras slab as the mantle from the left wall to just shy of the window, and a nice blackwood bookshelf above and below the slab on the left for contrast.

So I tore everything out I could and discovered some 70's carpet

The hearth was concrete that came approximately 40mm above the floor level, I was originally going to knock it all out the bottom and leave it under the house but as it was part of the base for the fire I decided against it. So I had to cut the hearth down with a grinder (soooooooooooo much dust)
