marble tops
I have some carrara marble lying about which I think I should use for a cabinet top (see image). At least the cat wont be able to damage it.
I used to have more but used it for a benchtop. At that time it still had the factory polish and one nice clean edge. With the remaining bits the edges have been damaged and the factory polish is still mainly there but there are scratches.
I would like to cut a piece to size, then repolish the top. It might be nice to be able to remove cutting marks from the edges and polish the edges, but otherwise I can just make sure the arises are clean and straight and fit a timber rim around.
Has anyone had hands-on experience cutting/repolishing marble on a DIY basis ? Any advice ?
cheers

I've used a Makita dustless cutter to cut stone with a clean edge and minimal dust.
polishing is another matter.
I'm guessing you'll need to invest in some diamond abrasivesregards from Alberta, Canada

I have not polished stone but the theory states that you need an abrasive that is harder than what you are polishing. Wet and dry paper is actually silicon carbide which will abrade your marble so simply use wet and dry up the grits until you get the finish you need. You could finish off by using automotive polish which should give you a nice fine finish.

You can easily cut it with a diamond blade, amongst other things you can run an arris with a normal file. If you have had it in the weather then that would cause the loss of polish.
Lay the marble flat outside, get a cake of solvol soap toss on some water and rub away in a polishing motion to even things up. Let dry and apply a floor polish, non silicone if you can, Ubeaut trad wax will do it and hit with a buffer. Yanis is correct you can use paper but I doubt your surface needs bringing back.
