    Default mastercrafts

Did anyone else watch 'mastercrafts' on SBS1 (Sydney) tonight, green woodworking, bodging, chair making ... I love our hobby!
It seemed to somehow portray what I want from my woodworking, respectful use of a magic and valuable material, the satisfaction of making something useful and beautiful, working with the material and not against it and using ancient skills.
It wasn't in the show and I'm no greenie but cutting down forests to shred a beautiful material to put it back together again to make paper now makes even less sense to me.
Watch it if it comes on near you...... inspirational!

PS, next week is roof thatching

Yes, I watched it, and I was inspired to join this forum, and try to find someone who could teach me how to do it. Do you know anyone near Canberra who runs courses?

Wow Richard, that's fantastic! There is a hardcore group of green woodworkers on the forum (that is they work green wood ... they aren't actually green!) and I think you have taken the first step in contacting them. Welcome to the forum!

It was a great show. I loved the focus on the acquisition of the craft, but what I really liked was how Monty Don linked the skills they were learning back to everyday applications such as building frames for cathedrals, coracles and roof joinery in houses.

One note I found jarring was the use of cordless drills to drill holes. Considering the mistakes the learners made were both made using a cordless drill, perhaps switching to brace and bit would have avoided those mistakes.

What a joy to be able to spend 6 weeks in a forest concentrating exclusively on woodworking, with a skilled teacher shared only three ways!
    Cheers, Richard

There's another show on the ABC about building a Roman villa, using traditional materials, tools and techniques that could get interesting. If they can concentrate on the techniques rather than the personalities of the participants it will be a good show.

    Saw it, good show.
I think Richard McKender ran a summer school at Sturt a couple of years ago, don't know if he's doing more.

How about an excellent teacher doing exactly this, 4 hours away. Residential week.

Yep, saw most of the Mastercrafts Program here at Port Vincent, Thursday evening as it was cold and damp outside, and happened to be inside for once near the ol' tellie. Watched the show from about 6.15pm through to the end at 7pm when the new came on. Was totally fascinated with what they were doing. Do think they could have done even better with the more traditional Craftsman Tools especially with the boring out of the holes, using the old Brace & bit, or maybe even its predecessor,- the big old bit with the sliding handle in the end, ( can't think of the correct name for them ), but were in common use before the invention of the Brace & bit, especially in the old time Blacksmiths shops for drilling bolt holes into timber framework, ( horse-drawn carts, drays, wagons, etc. ). Next week plan to watch the next Mastercrafts program on Thatching of roofs, which should also be interesting, along with the series on constructing Roman Villa using the original techniques, and, ( hopefully ) the old time tools too.

The Roman Villa project is a disappointment, its becoming very contrived and unconvincing as a result.

In relation to the Roman Villa it was disappointing that they went to so much trouble to stop them using the wheel barrows. Then in yesterdays episode the poor chippie had to fell and square off a tree trunk to make the truss frames. As the timber was still fairly rough his joints were not spot on but even the framing expert thought they were ok given the timber and only really had an issue with the pitch (which was wrong).

Then all of a sudden the chippie gets fired and the framing experts joinery firm were delivered tons of dressed oak so they could cut the joints.

Whilst trying to square up the timber by hand in the timeframes given is possibly unrealistic it was just interesting how quickly they brushed over getting all the timber machined square, especially given the ongoing battle over the wheel barrows. So much for sticking to traditional techniques.

did anyone see last night - Ancient Discoveries -Robotics - exploring the life of Heron of Alexandria.
What a fascinating program, then followed by the Azorian: The Raising Of The K-129, which was equally fascinating.

As for Roman Villa, correct, disappointing.
