Material Suppliers? Vic? -newbie
Hi all, bit of a green noob here looking for some help! I've been lurking around the forums for some time now and love the resources here!
I've mucked around with some small projects here and there, last one I tinkered with was restoring a table for my wife and building a matching mirror to sit above.
One of the projects I build in high school was a butchers block. (Mother unfortunately soaked it overnight some years later ) I'd like to build another for my wife, however this time with a stand and castoring wheels.
Where I'm looking for some help is with materials. I'm not sure on where to start looking for suppliers in Victoria. I've had a good search on google but most of the places I contacted were only interested in wholesale or really large lots or just didn't get back to me.
Ideally I'd like a reddish colour, I was hoping for jarrah however karri, redgum or anything of similar colour would suit me fine. Thinking maybe sassafrass as an alternate colour on the block itself however I am more than open to any suggestions on colour/timber suitability. Is pine usable for a butchers block?
I would like to build the stand out of the same red colour material as the top, so would also be looking for some legs as well.
If anyone has any suggestions on reputable suppliers, or any ideas for timber types I'd really appreciate any comments.
Thanks
Leith

I think you might find that Pine would not be suitable for a butchers block.
Could I also suggest that you give a smaller geographically location other than Victoria? I know that Victoria is kind of small compared to the rest of Australia.

Indeed! I'm located in south eastern suburbs, however travel to the cbd 3 times per week for work. Happy to travel for a reputable supplier.
Thanks for the reply.

Don't overlook jarrah. And google Matthews Timber, Rooks Road, Mitcham. Always reliable, not ridiculous price wise in my experience.

Agree,
Mathews timbers in rooks road are good.
Tile Importer, Timber Yards, DIY, Hardware, Oakleigh, Melbourne Tile importer in oakleigh is good as well.
for lathe blanks I go to pops shed in churnside park.
Just a customer of them all.

I take my trailer to Mathews timber. They don't seem to mind how much time you spend sorting through the stock racks until you find a board or two that takes your fancy.
Cheers, Glen

And don't forget Britton's in "Dandenong". Great timber at reasonable prices. You just need to let them know you're coming a couple of days in advance.

Rob

Didn't even know they existed. I grew up in Vomit (Vermont) so I've been going to Mathews since I was 11 years old. I've only been in dandy for 20 years. I even know a few road names here after that time.
We used to have arkana for a long time but they went away.
I've got to go look at this Brittons mob.
Thanks for the lead.
