Melamine - Iron on Edging
Hi
Have just about finished my walk - in robe out of white melamine.
I need a few metres of the iron on edging and a trimmer.
I went to my local Bunnings in Perth and spoke to a guy who said that Bunnings do not carry it?? - odd as I thought they would have, so I looked for it anyway but could not find either.
Anyone know of somewhere in Perth on online where I can order small amounts.
Cheers

My local Bunnings carry the iron on melamine edging strips but not the trimmer. I just use a sharp putty knife for trimming rather then a trimmer ( which I bought a few years ago from Lincoln and Sentry) but Lincoln and Sentry carry both.

My dad only build furniture using white melamine. He use lots of iron on edging from Bunnings. To trim, he just use the standard office blade, ones that you can get from safeway or coles - stationary section. Just make sure you get the bigger blade one.
Put the blade perpendicular to flat surface against the edging strip and starts slicing.
I have never done it myself but it looks so easy for him.

In Melbourne I have seen iron on edging in Bunnings near the panels. You do not need a trimmer to trim after application as others have attested to here. I have used a file but will now use a router with flush trim bit.
It is easier to apply edging before assembly. As with lots of things it gets easier the more you do.

Bunnings in Bundaberg also carry melamine edge tape.
To trim it I use a flush trim bit.Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.

Arry,
The Trade Desk at Bunnings Balcatta sell the iron-on edging by the metre (my last purchase was about 12 months ago - may be things have since changed). The two sided trimmer is sold by Beyond Tools, Malga (telephone them on (08) 9209 7400 to check that the trimmer is in stock).

My 2c
Arry, for just a couple of metres, you may as well go to the green shed, but last time I looked, it was around $10 for a small 10m blister pack there, vs something like $20 for a 100m roll of ABS edge-band from a cabinetry supplier.
I use a Virutex portable edge-bander (see here) for both the thin ABS (the stuff you're after that you can apply with an iron) and also thick PVC (must have the glue heated from underneath by an edgebander) and have never looked back.
As for trimming:
I used to use a file for ABS and a veneer trim router for PVC, but have switched to a plane blade for both. A router is very slow, noisy, messy and laborious. The resulting edge needs to be cleaned up by hand later with a file (and often sand paper as well) and the bearing on the router bit regularly clogs with glue, jamming it and then marking your panel. A plane blade is by comparison, blindingly quick, quiet and doesn't spray chips everywhere. More effort is required to push a plane blade through PVC than for ABS, but the resulting edge doesn't even need a sharp corner rounded off and is ready to go straight away.
Using a plane blade, I would absolutely flog anyone with a file or router for sheer speed (trust me, the time really adds up even for small jobs) and quality of finish.
Good luck with it.

Plane blade is the way to go. A wide chisel is OK but a bit heavy and can be inclined to bite in if you're not used to it. A quick wipe with fine sand paper will remove the sharp edge left after trimming.

I've bought it recently from Bunnings in Balcatta and I know they have it at Osborne Park too, but you have to go to the Trade Desk for it.

I've got a roll of the stuff, and you can help yourself, gratis. I'm in Ellenbrook if you want to grab some.
Don't know how far away you are, but PM me if you're interested.
