On Saturday I got a chance to meet Neil and I got some hide glue from him. I had some concerns about hide glue and Australian hardwoods. Neil I am glad to say that hide glue is strong. Strong enough so that I cannot break with my two hands a butt joint between two pieces of Jarrah. I already love the stuff, the smell is not bad, it is almost pleasant , reminds me of a working farm, the smell of old horses stables. It also takes a tack so fast, that clamps are almost not needed and with in 2 hours it was rock hard. Non-toxic, reversible, durable, I think it will become my stable horses glue (the pun is intended for the horses amongst us).

    Great stuff.

Picked up some timber on Sunday, a small slab of Swamp Mahogany for $12 marked down from $25 . It has some amazing figure in the crotch wood area, spent the evening planing it tear out free, thanks to HNT . I am going to add a butterfly keys and fill it with epoxy.

I also picked up a small slab of Crows Ash for $30 marked down from $80 . again a crotch wood piece with some nice figure.

The mad sunday sale is the best.

Now I am going to retire with Neil's Polishing Book.

I went this year shopping for a thicknesser. I'd talked to all the usual suspects in the last few weeks, had decided I'd step up from the $300 range to the $6-700 range, to get the extras (two speeds, digital readout, better quality bearings, motor etc).

I took a wander over to the Timbecon stand, and sure enought they had their 13" 2 speed model reduced from $649 to $599. Great I thought, but let's make the rounds first. Found my way over to the Hare & Forbes stand, and there sat.... the same machine, but in a different paint colour. Looked closer, yup same two speeds, same spec motor, same digital gauge... $499.. Only real difference is 2 yr warrenty instead of the 3 yrs Timbecon gives.

Seems they have just added this (not in their printed catalog yet), and I'm not sure of this will be their regular price or a show special, but I grabbed one. Once I've had a chance to set it up and try it out in a week or two I'll post my impressions.

Now to take the money I saved and buy a good metal detector...

That's good shopping. Might be 1 year less warranty, but if you have a claim it's no great difficulty to take it to Dandenong rather than ship it to Perth.

I could have spent the whole day there on Saturday, but time and budget mandated a fast get-away!

Perhaps I wasn't looking hard enough, but I only met while we were out for a cofin nail, tip of the hat to you, sir. I must have missed the ubeaut stand.

I also met our mate Terry Gordon, who seemed to look like he was a bit tired of the whole things by Saturday arvo, but was an utter gentleman regardless. Got a few tips on tuning and adjusting my home-made planes as well as purchasing a 6mm iron. After a little tuning of my planes I now understand why Terry recommends the HSS irons. I can see myself making quite a few more planes very soon.

Here's to having a bigger budget next year! Cheers!

    Default Two days

I went on Saturday, with an idea that I would walk out with a WASP sander. I didn't even take my backpack and went in by train.

Fortunatley, a friend turned up around 2pm, so he helped to lug the multiple items I bought - some bits of timber, couple of clamps, the WASP, honing guide, some ubeaut stuff, the bench pro vice thing, a few other bits and pieces.

Went home, read some brochures, checked the net.

Went back on Sunday with another friend, and bought a cabinet scraper, more bits of timber and a Gifkin's jig

    A good two days.

Except that I have really inconsiderate friends; They invite me out to dinner, so I dont get to play with my new toys.

I went on Friday, watched Richard Raffan with his skew demo, no end to the list of things I am doing wrong with that tool.... Also watched Roger Gifkins do his box demo. Various purchases made through the day, caught up with Brett at Addictive Pen kits and bought a few bits, bought a finger template for my Gifkins, some U-Beaut products, some timber for box making and generally enjoyed looking around.

I especially liked the Ken Wraight piece the small ebony seahorse and his crayfish. Will Mathysiens (sp) wooden clock was wonderful and I was amused by the table titled "penguins swimming" or similar, can't remember the makers name but I liked it very much.

Overall, thought the numbers were good and I liked the more spacious layout.

Dreams for future purchases? Any of the HNT planes I haven't got already, a Stubby 400 would be pretty nice and did like Chris Vespers offerings I must admit.

And like so many others, kicking myself about forgetting the metric Forsteners.......

Rod Jones made that table, he has made a series of similar tables all involving nature. He studies the animals before he carves them and he is quite knowledgeable on nature especially birds and plants.

Wow, so you were one of the demonstrators, cool. The guy who demoed it for us was about 7 foot 2 inches tall, and one hell of a nice guy to boot. Which is a good thing 'cause we don't need 7'2" people who are aggressive and nasty.

The Kincrome marketing people are ringing tomorrow to tell me where to collect it from. So, if I get stuck trying to work out all the features I will take up your offer with any questions i might have.

    Cheers.
