Hi nad1,
I think you will find that Keith is referring to the way you are passing the wood through the saw. Also the fact that there is no protection over the saw blade. There is a high risk of the piece between the saw blade and the fence getting jammed onto the blade and getting thrown back at high speed. Had the piece you have in your hand contacted the spinning blade as you went to clear the small piece, it too could have become a projectile. There is plenty of information out there on safe operation of a tablesaw. Please check it out while you still have all your fingers. We want you to enjoy your woodworking experience.
Cheers,
Mac

Good on you for thinking up your design. Not everyone has all the luxuries and have to think more about how they accomplish something they would like to do.
Due to the size of the blade and speed it would be spinning I don't think you will encounter a major problem provided you push on the fence side piece rather than the other side. If the gap is large enough between the fence and blade you can push with your hand or if too small use a push stick. I f you could fit a splitter into your table at the back of the blade that would help eliminate any kickback like this. Here is an easy way of doing it that you could adapt to suit your saw.
I wouldn't think you would need another bearing on the other side of the blade unless you use it all day every day.
Good luck with all your small projects you built it for.Dallas

How about making a mini Cross-Cut sled for it and a clear guard above the blade in case something lets go? Should cost next to nothing.
