    Default Mitre Spline

    Hi

I tried a mite spline on a tray I built. I believe that I have got the grain going the wrong way. You can see the jarrah grain is inline with the joint instead of grain running 90 degrees to it. Appreciate any comments on this.

Yes, it is the wrong way. The splines are not just decorative, but also add strength, so the grain needs to be running in the same direction as the tray sides to achieve this.

    Is this correct
I thought the grain in the splines needed to run at 45° to each of the sides at the corner (or is this just one of those bad English explanations stuff and we actually agree)

Hi Nick. We are talking about the same thing. Your drawing and my photo are showing the same thing. The timber spline is at 45 degrees but the grain in my photo is at 90 degrees to the spline where it should be running along the spline.

I Think that Nick's drawing is correct, with the grain of the spline running at 90deg. to the mitre cut.

What Nick's drawing shows is the way they should be running, as Keith says.
Being pedantic, they are not splines but slipfeathers. Splines run from (in a box) top to bottom. Again, the long grain must run across the mitre, not from top to bottom.
