    Default Mortise Glue Question

Hi Guys,Brand new to this forum, and getting into some wood work after years of fabrication with steel.Could anyone a suitable glue to use on a mortise and tenon gate I am building?90x42 H3 frame out of Design Pine, and 11mm H3 lining board infill in a Hamptons shaker design. (Photos attached) We don't get the 65mm x90 or the 19mm lining boards unfortunately in WA. I was suggested to just use Liquid Nails (Yellow Tube) in the joins plus back dowl pin and clamp, but have also seen the red tube extreme liquid nails or even the sika Pro that has all the qualities I`ve read you need in a gate glue joint.Any help would be great!Cheers,HamishPerth

Assuming a gate will be for outdoor use, I'd think Titebond III (see here: Titebond) ought to do the job.

    Hi Mate,

Yes it will be outside as side house gates.

Is the liquid nails yellow fast grab or red tube extreme no good?

Even the ska pro polyurethane? Thought it may be easy to apply in a gun for the mortises?

I`ve routed a notch for the lining boards all-round, should I gun a bead of glue between the boards as well as around the routed slot when I glue it all up?

    Cheers,

    Hamish

Basically the glue you use needs to be waterproof, resistant to mechanical stress and UV degradation, liquid enough to form a good joint, and available to you. Personally I think any of those glues, if they are waterproof, will be fine. You should decide based on cost, availability, and factors like how much open time you need on the glue. TB3 as recommended above is a waterproof woodworking glue but personally for that application I'd think what you're proposing would be fine.

I have to agree with hamish_WA on the Tite Bond III. While any of Urethane will work, they are best when you have two perfectly flat surface surfaces being joined. The TB III seems to offer a better water proof joint.

From observations of pulling joints apart, the Urethane seems to break in the glue while the TB III seems to pull the wood fibers apart.

    Your Mileage May Vary.
