Thank you all (I usually say y'all because I am from north east tennessee). I have made this box for my wife last year, and there is a story behind the wood it is made from.

I was born In California and raised in Northern Michigan, and moved down here to tennessee when I was 10. I married my high school sweet heart 31 years ago. This box is made of black walnut with a little red oak trim on the top. The wood is what her grandfather purchased back about 1950 something. She found where her grandmother spoke of it in her diary she wrote, "pap bought some old wood at an auction and placed it in the top of the ole shed nearest the house. I recon it'll be there till the end of time".

I found this black walnut, red oak, white oak, and what I told was cherry. There was a lot of cherry, but being sawmill cut back then, requires alot of planing and sorting. I am now trying to build a cherry display case, but running low on the cherry and had find some at a local saw mill. The old guy at the saw mill told me it was cherry, but it looks alot darker then what he had.

Anyhow I am struggling with my 45 degree cuts at the corners of the base..

Welcom to the forum. I must say I've always been a bit envious of the ready access to interesting timbers you Americans and Europeans have. As for the mitre cuts it's practice, practice practice

I'm currently building a small cabinet with 2 drawers and 2 doors. So far I have used enough timber for 3 sets of doors and 2 1/2 drawers.
I consider this to be my apprenticeship and well worth the expense

Welcome to the Forum.
Like most of us, we put materials aside planing on using it some time. Well done for using the "In Law's" timber. It would have come at the right price.

I have trouble getting rid of some of my off cuts - it could be useful some day. May be one day I will have a big clean up, cut up and make some fire wood. Most of what I have is cheap pine, or panels.
