    Default Newbie looking for advice

    Hi all

New to the forum and looking for some advice.

I'm a complete novice with woodworking but really keen to get involved and start off with a couple of small projects and build up to larger ones. But I'm very unsure as to the type of timber I should use.

First off I want to build and entry table/shoe rack for our hallway. Can I just buy pine from bunnings for this? And if so I've had a look and all the pine seems very rough - will this sand down to a nice smooth finish?

Going forward I want to build a drinks display cabinet, floating shelves, outdoor furniture and re-do our garden and deck. Best start with a smaller project first though - was thinking something like this:

Any way advice on what kind of timber to use would be most appreciated.

Also re tools, I have a circular saw and jig-saw. Thinking of buying a compound mitre saw and Kreg jig. What else do I need to start off with?

    Thank you!

Welcome to woodworking. I guess the first step is a place to work in like a garage or shed. Some basic marking tools like pencil, square, tape and ruler. A hammer, screwdrivers, a handplane (no 4 or 5) a drill and a hand saw. That with the power tools you already have then you can build a simple work bench. That will give you a feel for the tools and how things go together. Now that first bench does not need to be fancy just sturdy platform to work on. Plenty of info on here and the net on how to build just about anything. A decent work place makes a huge difference the quality of what you make and the pleasure you get from making things. Take things one step at a time and get the tools you need for that project. Tools and machines are expensive so dont expect to get everything right away. Next project then perhaps another tool and so on. I have never used pockethole screws so cant commet on those
As to woods to use, after a few projects under the belt you will start get a feel for what is suitable plus what you like the look of. The internet again has loads of info. Pine is fine for a lot of things and that clip shows pine for that table. That said I think pine looks best as pine and not stained up to look like something else.
Basically what I am trying to say is get set up with a work space then take things one project at a time and of course ask the questions on here as there is a goldmine of info on this forum. I think every member on here has become a better woodworker just by being on this forum and soaking up that information.

    Regards
    John
