Default Northern silky oak for fishing reel repair

    Hi all

I'm trying to source some northern silky oak to repair damage to an old 'Perfect' brand fishing reel spool, circa 1920's to 1930's. The photos landed in the wrong order but the third one shows the reel spool as originally found while the first two show it after sanding. The spool itself is 4" in diameter.

My plan is to remove the damaged sections by routing a trench then glue in a matching piece of NSO on each side. One trench will be shallow but the trench on the other side will be deeper. I did buy some NSO knife handle scale blanks off ebay because that was all I could find in NSO. Unfortunately I can't match the end grain orientation as shown in the side view without cutting and laminating the scale blanks several times. Ideally I would like to cut the desired replacement piece from a single block to match the end grain. I'm not trying to hide the repair but would like it to blend in.

Google has not been my friend in trying to source some NSO as it appears to be very scarce as say turning blanks or similar. Does anyone have recommendations as where I may obtain some NSO to suit.

I did briefly consider turning a new spool but (a) I couldn't find any NSO turning blanks, and (b) I would have absolutely no hope in removing the brass rim (shown below) from the bottom of the old spool with buggering it up completely and re-fitting it to a new spool, and (c) then it wouldn't really be an original Perfect fishing reel.

    Thanks in advance (hopefully)

What size are you after. I happen to have a piece about 3”x2” and about a foot long if that suits you, just have to find it in the shed.

That would be pretty good for size. Thanks DJ.

My late father was an Alvey wooden reel fanatic and had a series from small trout reels to quite large surf reels - all from Australian red cedar, I think.

I saw him make several repairs over the years, similar to yours, some much worse. His technique was to hand cut a dovetail shaped trench, and to enlarge it until all damaged wood disappeared. (He did not have a router.) He then cut a matching tenon being careful to align the grain - a few tenons got rejected. When satisfied, he epoxyed the tenon in place.

Then he gave the reel to a friend who had a lathe and he truned the reel under very strict instructions not to peel away any of the original reel. He then spent a couple of weeks wet sanding the reel with two pack estapol up through the grits until he had a mirror finish. A coat of wax polish and off fishing.

He was certainly addicted to those classical wooden reels!

PS: Dad always insisted that the dovetail tenons were stronger, but I sometimes wondered if it was about skiting rights - they did look good against the compound curviture of the reel.

Ok, I’ll have a look tomorrow, I know roughly whereabouts it is and should be able to find it without too much trouble.

Ive had it for about 25yrs, so should be nice and dry

If it doesn't work out for you I can supply a blank the size you want.

    Thanks all.

A dovetailed repair would look pretty classy. Problem is my hands would be shaking so much in fear of stuffing the spool that in all likelihood I would make an irreparable mistake.

But that has now got me thinking of a couple of old alvey cedar spools sitting in the spares box that have some damage - they could be the test dummies. Bugga - looks like I'm headed down another rabbit hole.

Ok I found it, some of it has water stains from sitting in a bucket and a leak in the roof

Anyway, it is 70mm x 40mm x 530 long with 250mm clear of water stains.

I can cut it at 250mm for you if that will suit you.
