T nuts
I've watched many wood workers predrill holes for the claws on t nuts. By the time I drill holes for the t nut shaft there's not much wood left around the shaft. The holes I drill get pulled into the shaft hole. I must be missing something.

Drill the hole for the T-nut claws BEFORE you drill the hole for the T-nut body.
Normally, I'd use a Forstner bit for the claws. The Forstner will leave a center mark for the second hole.
for me the drilling sequence is
1. hole for the claws
2. hole for the T-Nut body
3. hole for the shank of the bolt -- not always requiredregards from Alberta, Canada

I must be missing something,; I have never drilled holes for the claws on a wing nut. For the body yes, but never the claws. I just let them pull into the timber.

As Lappa said usually no need for claw holes. Perhaps if it was a really hard timber I would think about if it did not snug up when tightened.

You don't need holes for the claws, the whole point is that they dig in

I figured sussertown is trying to either counter sink the T-nut or get it to sit flush with the surface

There are MANY video posts with top notch wood workers counter sinking t nuts and drill holes for the claws. In the videos there is plenty of room for these holes. I have to admit I save used hardware and it could be that the claws moved too close to the center on these. I just used some brand new ones and there was extra room. thank you.
