    Default Oh No! I @&^#%* me Compound mitre saw!!!

    Well as some of you are aware a few weeks ago I did a post in the safety thread about a recent near miss I had with my 12" SCMS. To my horror not long after................ I discovered I tore off a casted piece of metal moulding behind the feed wall of the face of what is supposed to be a square fence.

    This moulding is supposed to keep the fence square & true

    Needless to say I no longer had a SCMS that had a square solid reliable fence to help achieve good accurate cuts from my saw. you'll eventually see in one of the pictures I post where the damage is done. Thought I'd share this one just in case anyone else has a bit of frank spencer in em like me

    I thought about epoxy; welds and all sorts of other weird and wonderfull fixes BUT thought it would be cool if I could come up with a microadjustable option to give me a true square fence to help with those cuts on the Sliding Compound Mitre Saw.

    ...............To the rescue came a cool little item from a place called the craftsman gallery. I had origionally bought this little microadjustable Jig for my Woodrat!

    But seeing their relatively cheap thought it'd be just the ticket for a potential solution to my problem. Everything depended on two factors.

    1. If the thread on the Microadjustable Jig fit a taped hole behind the fence of my SCMS

    2. If I had the BAlls to try and mill a small hole in the jig on my drill press

    It was a goer on all counts...............So i quickly routed a V groove in some stock to hold the Rat Jig in place so I could start my Moungrel Microadjustable MAk Jig for my SCMS Fence!!!!

    The pics below show all the pieces of the Jig me adjusting the fence and the Jig in place.

    Note the broken casting!!!!...........Unbelieveable huh!!! :mad:

    The jig microadjusts by simply turning the thread on the knurled machined nut. After about 5 minutes of carefully mucking around I had a perfectly true SCMS fence

    This was a great relief considering It was &^@$(@!!!! Theres a full review of this little microadjuster at the craftsmans gallery and I reckon could come in handy for a number of fixes n jigs!!!!

    Needless to say I'm a Happy Camper and am now getting great results from the Mak!!!!

    I'm a fascinated novice Lou.

    1. What's a Wood Rat in conventional speak?
    2. Craftsman gallery sounds useful - what's its URL?
    3. What exactly is your jig trying to fix? Seems you're trying to adjust the 90 degree angle to whatever fence you buggered.
    4. I can make outthe v-grooves in the jig but the pics are too blurred to see what you made. Can I ask for sharper pics please.
    5. What has this to do with drilling holes in your drill press table?

    As you can see I'm trying to learn from your obvious experience. (Major suck-up here!).

    New Lou,

    Just wondering what make and model your scms is, it looks quite different to one I have which is a Makita knockoff by Sherwood. It has a fence secured by several bolts which is adjustable but after initial setup no need for any change.

    Thanks Lou. The woodworking world has changed quite a bit from my school days, but I plan to pull myself up by the shoe laces and get back into it.

    I discovered a Falcon plane in my old kit: 9 inches long and 4 inches wide. It dates to about 1976 I'd guess (may be older). Is it any good and should I sharpen her up or is it a junk brand?

    That old Wood Rat is one hell of a machine. Never seen one at bunnies, tho - sure beats making jigs.
