    Default An "Oh Wow"moment

Thanks to member Ellanjacobs, I hope i got that right, I have had an Oh Wow moment.

I have been having sore hand troubles while using sanders. I was needing a new Random orbit sander and read in the forum how happy Ellanjacobs was with the new Mirka Ceros sander so I decided to check them out. There are a few places in Australia that sell the Mirka Ceros but I wanted a 125mm or 5 inch sander and all I could find in Australia was the 6 inch or 150mm one. The sellers in Australia were fairly un-helpful and prices were ranging from $550 plus gst for a sander in a cardboard box to $860.00 for one in a systainer. I looked on the net and contacted quite a few sellers in the USA with none wanting to sell to Australia. I then contacted Peachtree Woodworking in the USA and they were happy to send me one. $670.00 on the Visa card later and I got a 5 inch sander in a systainer and a pack of velcro pad protectors and an full assortment of Abranet discs and some heavy duty Abranet discs delivered to my door.13 days from payment to delivery. Packed fantastically.

Out to the workshop. Hooked it to the vacuum, found an old cord from a computer and plugged it in and I must say, it is fantastic. Quiet, smooth, very very light and not a hint of dust. Went through the grits on some camphor laurel shelves that I am doing and I am wrapped. Sanded the three shelves and no hand pain.

So thanks Ellanjacobs for the heads up and anyone looking for a new random orbit should seriously look at the Mirka Ceros. I am going to save now and get just the 150mm sander part to compliment the 125. It just plugs into the same transformer.

For those worried about warranty. There are Australian repairers or just send it back to Peachtree. I have a very extensive array of tools and machines and in all of my years have had only one or two grizzles requiring warranty.

Good to hear. For clarity, I assume, that an additional 110-240V transformer is required. Is that correct?

Nope, the supplied AC-DC (not the band) transformer/rectifier will handle any input voltage.

Glad you like it Col, it was an Oh Wow moment for me as well when I first used it.

    Happy sanding,

No. As Elan stated. It just plugs into any voltage from 90 to 240 volts. It is the same input socket into the transformer as found on computers and many TV sets so I just replaced the USA cord with an old computer cord that I had and it was right to go.

Not sure if the following is relevant for you, just found it on Fine Woodworking website and recalled this thread from a few days ago, so passing it on for those in the know to check for relevance.

Mirka Abrasives, Inc. has announced a factory recall on it's CEROS 650 and 550 sanders, citing three cases of electrical shorting which resulted in smoke and sparks being emitted from the unit. Mirka believes this short to be caused by a fault in a circuit board in the tool's handle.

All 5 or 6 in. CEROS sander, purchased after November 1, 2013, and within the following serial number ranges, are under recall and are eligible to be replaced:

    347228672001 to 347228672048
    349428672001 to 349428672048
    403228672001 to 403228672048
    404328672001 to 404328672048
    344228673001 to 344228673048
    344328673001 to 344328673048
    346128673001 to 346128673048
    347128673001 to 347128673048
    403328673001 to 403328673048
    404228673001 to 404228673048
    404328673001 to 404328673048

The serial number can be found on the side of the plastic storage case provided with the sander and engraved on the side of the sander just above the dust shroud.

While no injuries or damage have been reported, Mirka and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission suggest immediately unplugging recalled units and contacting Mirka for a free replacement.

Mirka can be contacted at 1-(800)-843-3904 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday. The company can also be contacted at www.mirka-usa.com.

Those looking for further information can visit the Mirka Recall page or the CPSC Recall Notification page.
I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

I saw that the day after I got mine and thought "that would be just my luck"

I checked my serial number and I am well past any of those numbers which is good for me.
