If anyone around the northern parts of Sydney - or who wants to waste some petrol - can't find a source of free pallets, I have a stack (12-ish) of old weatherbeaten pallets sitting in the spare driveway - come & take some away. Please??????

Happy to donate a mallet custom made to the winner's specifications (size, weight, shape) of olive wood.
My apologies for not looking at the links before. One point that seems to have been missed by everybody, is that in those competitions all the pallets were essentially the same and were supplied by only one source. This makes those competitions essentially the same as those we had but virtually impossible to achieve on a national basis, not the same as what is proposed here.
If recycled is what you want, I humbly suggest that instead of saying pallet, crate or similar, the stipulation be:
xxx kilograms (to be fully utilised) of recycled yyy species (could be as broad as "Australian hardwood" or "pine") timber however and wherever sourced.
That IMHO would overcome all the "useless crap" .

Rather than arguing about pallet specification, just take a photograph of what you use as your timber source and then the finished piece.
The judges can then take it into consideration during the judging process.

Finding your own pallet is part of the skill of this competion, it isn't just about working the wood but also finding the wood. This way you have the broadest possible chance of getting the best selection of wood to suit your particular project. That has to be better than someone saying "you must use this pallet"!! This can't be a disadvantage to anyone can it??

Just an update for everyone. Carl and I working together to finalise the arrangements for the Pallet Challenge. Once FC's Box Challenge is completed and a few or so days later, the Pallet Challenge Rules will be published and entrants invited to post their interest.
Until then, continue on
cheers

I am pleased Wendy is one of the mods. I may be seeing her on Saturday and I will be taking a huge pot of grease with me for her palms. I hope she wears large overalls with a big back pocket as I feel that may help me too. Also, a few paper bags never goes astray in Queensland.
After all, " All is fair in love and woodwork."

Wife would like a bird feeder.
I have some pallets that ATMs came on, they are not standard Chep size but have enough timber for a bird feeder.Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

Why the hell not!
Let the fun begin. I can just see all those pallets out there shivering in their peeling paint, scared of what is about to happen to them.
