Paring, Mortise, Firmer, Bevel, ... ?
Could someone give me an idea what each of these is used for. I am familiar with bevel edge chisels and do all my mortising with these, but I would like to improve what I do. Obviously a mortise chisel is for this purpose - what are paring and firmer chisels for? I have bid on a couple of mortise chisels on ebay, but keep getting pipped when I am at work. Thanks for your help, Cheers.

HI Gilbo,
You don't need a mortising chisel to chop a mortice. The bench chisels will work fine, but a mortising chisel just makes it work quicker (takes more abuse and will not bend)
Paring chisels have a very long blade and are used to accurately trim/pare finished surfaces - you get more control with the extra length, although the blades may flex a bit.
The firmer chisel is the old bench chisel from the 1800's and is rectangular (almost - maybe slightly thinner on the upper edge) in cross section.
Takes a lot more abuse, and it's 'firmer' than a bevelled edge chisel.

Thanks for the directions Dan. This is certainly an excellent breakdown of what is around. I now know a lot more about what I am looking at. Cheers.

I knew if I waited long enough someone would ask that question for me! Thanks, Gilbo, and thanks everyone else for the answers.
Cheers, Richard
