Thread: Piano hinges fit!

To get a better fit I would rebate the hinge, take half the hinge thickness off each side.

If the door won't be opened more than 180 degrees, it's an idea to measure from the centre of the hinge pin to the outside edge of each leaf and make that the width of each rebate.

That way the barrel of the hinge will also be semi-recessed, only the 'outside' curve shows, giving a much neater look.

Yes but .
One thing I like to do, to get an exact understanding which is real important sometimes, is .

Do a quick life size pencil drawing just with a ruler square and pencil on some paper of the top right corner of the cabinet ,with the hinge placed where you want it . Then on another scrap draw the door with the hinge and cut it out. Then put a tack or pin or the pointy end of a scribe through the dead center of hinge pin and rotate the drawing of the door. To see how it works and where it will end up binding or touching .
It sounds slightly complex but its not . Its a great aid to seeing and understanding whats going to happen with different hinge positions. With some hinges there is always a few positions it could go . Slight changes can mean a lot. And trying to see it by imagination I find almost impossible sometimes.
On things like Bureau flap hinges where there are rebates and leather covered writing surfaces that have to line up when its open is one I remember .
