I have never made picture frames before but I want to give it a shot as a present for my wife.


I am thinking of 3 picture frames with pictures from our wedding side by side.


I have a lot of Jarrah in the shop but not much else, maybe a bit of Marri.


Question: The floor of my house is blackbutt so was wondering what would go well on the wall with that do you think?


Also besides Carbatec in Perth where else can I get decent and reasonaby priced timber without going down south?

I would like something to contrast the jarrah or maybe not even use Jarrah?

You can see some ideas for picture frames on my web site(see below).
I made some nice little frames using radiata pine and Black Japan.
Alternatively, you could make one long frame and put the three photos in together, The frame need only be 800 x 400mm or less depending on the size of the photos.
As another alternative, you could make three small frames of Jarrah, with a Marri Inlay and hinge them together. If your photos aren't too big you probably won't need too much Marri. But it should give a nice complement to the Jarrah.

what size frames are you thinking of?
(in inches) 8 x 5, 6 x 4, 15 x 8

I have two very nice frames
one is Silky oak, inlaid with Ash, Aust Red Cedar, white Sirus
the other is Coachwood, inlaid with Pine, Red Cedar and Hoop Pine.
on each frame the two middle inlays are ~1/16 wide, and the inner one about 3/16 wide
the inner inlay frams the photo, see attached sketch

A frame is just that, something that surrounds….

What you say you want is to make them something special, that will sit for years to come to remind you of the day. You don’t say what tools / equipment you have but have you considered fretting in the date of your Marriage (no excuse for forgetting the anniversary then), your names or something similar into a freeze at the top of each the frames.

If you don’t have a fretsaw is there a one-man-band / company locally that can laser etch the same or other idea into your wood.
